Negotiations hit a snag after Republican aides characterise proposals made by Treasury secretary as 'outrageous'

The first serious proposals from the White House to solve the looming "fiscal cliff" of tax rises and budget cuts appear to have been rejected out of hand by Republican leaders in Congress.

Treasury secretary Timothy Geithner is reported to have offered a set of proposals that include increasing tax rates on the wealthy, a one-year postponement of scheduled cuts in defence and domestic spending, and $400bn in savings from Medicare and other entitlement programmes.

Name a sizable cut. The military? Fine that gets you maybe .25 of the way there.

Any article on this subject is guesswork for now. We won't know the fallout until a deal is struck.

You said Obama was offering sizable cuts that his fellow Democrats were against. Name one. They weren't in the article and its a fact that Geithner told McConnell that POTUS wanted tax increases now and cuts next year and that Obama wants the Office of the President to have unilateral power to raise the debt limit.

But you're right, we'll have to let the chips fall where they may.

Encore: United States of ALEC
November 30, 2012 / http://tinyurl.com/cuwj5qy
In an encore broadcast, Moyers & Company presents “United States of ALEC,” a report on the most influential corporate-funded political force most of America has never heard of — ALEC, the American Legislative Exchange Council. A national consortium of state politicians and powerful corporations, ALEC presents itself as a “nonpartisan public-private partnership”. But behind that mantra lies a vast network of corporate lobbying and political action aimed to increase corporate profits at public expense without public knowledge.
In state houses around the country, hundreds of pieces of boilerplate ALEC legislation are proposed or enacted that would, among other things, dilute collective bargaining rights, make it harder for some Americans to vote, and limit corporate liability for harm caused to consumers — each accomplished without the public ever knowing who’s behind it. One Wisconsin politician describes ALEC as “a corporate dating service for lonely legislators and corporate special interests.”
“United States of ALEC” is a collaboration between Okapi Productions, LLC and the Schumann Media Center, headed by Bill Moyers, which supports independent journalism and public watchdogs including the Center for Media and Democracy, whose investigators are featured in the report.

Here are three areas where Obama is receiving opposition from Democrats:

1- There is Democratic opposition to Obama's proposed cuts in benefit programs.

2- There is Democratic opposition to Obama's proposal to raise real estate taxes.

3- Some Democrats oppose raising taxes on those earning $250,000 or more. Instead they want the tax breaks to end only for those earning $1 million or more.

With respect raising the debt limit, this is something that is customarily approved by both sides. Unlike in the past, Obama is getting strong opposition on this matter, something which is routinely agreed to. I have to wonder why.
