The problem with death threats is that if acted on, they would confer an undeserved dignity on a bigot by making her a martyr for those who share her stupid, ignorant views and condone her irresponsible remarks that made light of Matthew Shepard's tragic end.

How did she make light of it? Is she opposed to the death penalty for murder?

The death threats are probably a hoax just like they were in the Sally Kern case. The Capitol Police said that there was "no ongoing investigation" of the matter, which means the police have received no information about death threats from Foxx's office according to the Washington Post.

She made light of his death by saying that the reason for it being called a hate crime was a hoax. She seems to have thought that robbery was the primary reason for the crime against Shepard, when the killers have already admitted that they knew he was gay and that played a big part in their torture and murder of him. The bottom line is that she didn't want a hate crime bill passed.

In any case, the Matthew Shepard Hate Crime bill has passed in the House by 249-175. So, at least in the House, Ms.Foxx did not prevail. Hopefully, the Senate will pass it now.

One of the problems, and I agree with you. another is that we do not want to endorse any pattern of violence, for both practical and moral reasons. third is the matter of proportionality - the proportinal thing to say is that her report of death threats is a hoax. Hi, Anne. Glad to see you again. You slipped just a tiny bit - should have said "one of" You are often almost word-perfect in your careful, but strong and rational language. We all slip now and then! Watch Fox on cspan in the evenings, if you want to go to sleep early!

Yes, good comment. worth watching to see what the senate will do - and who might vote against it. My bet is on Inhofe. No one worse in the Senate.

Who said anything about it being homosexuals? Did it ever occur that straight people could have made those threats. Judy Shepard is straight I'm sure and probably wouldn't go that far but I'm sure she'd like to say a few harsh things to the woman. It could have been gay supportive people or people who have or had a family member that was gay and a victim of a hate crime.

Daily Horoscope for December 31

Virgo

Someone is being headstrong and wilful, and absolutely determined to do what they want. Mercury is retrograde and it's a Full Moon in Cancer with a lunar eclipse all happening tonight! This could lead to some heated discussions and possibly even rows, as you argue the toss back and forth. It might be best to accept that there's very little possibility of reaching an agreement rather than to get locked in a stubborn battle of wills. Besides, you don't want anything to spoil what promises to be a very enjoyable New Year's Eve. Have fun!
