Actually that is what they have been doing. The reason fuel is as high as it is , is because of the government. They tie up supplies by not issuing drilling permits, endless stupid regulations on the energy industry at all stages.
To get us cheap gas all they have to do is get out of the way.
I'm not buying the drilling permits line
Domestic supply is at an all time high
Domestic demand is at an all time low
Mexico's Gov't controls their gas prices
& they're paying $2 less a gal.
What else ya got?

What else: oil companies shipping refined products to overseas markets in order to inflate domestic prices. On a dollar basis, the US is now a net exporter of oil.

A part of the reason for the price maybe because of the fact we aren't the worlds reserve currency anymore.
Think about it this way.
At this point in time because our goverment has borrowed so much from other countries, such as china, a dollar is worth about 50 cents instead of a dollar. If it was worth a whole dollar then we would be paying $2.00 a gallon instead of $4.00 a gallon.
Could be a large part of the problem.

Very astute in your observation....

The Obama complicitors try to oversimplify the issue. A root cause for high gas prices is the devalued dollar on the world market caused by 15.4 TRILLION U.S. debt, exceeding our 15 TRILLION gross domestic product, forcing the federal government to borrow approximately 40 cents on every dollar it spends. This causes inflation of all commodities, among which is GAS. Can we avoid noticing higher food prices? <gag>

When Obama came into office, the national average cost of gas was $1.86 a gallon. Today it's $3.76 (avg). He's added a record FIVE TRILLION to the debt, driving up gas prices, along with diminishing your $avings...

All the spin coming from President Maytag won't help his chances when it reaches $5 bucks a gallon this summer. Remember that sign on Harry S. Truman's desk in the oval orifice??....."The Buck Stops Here!!"

Mr. Truman, where are you when we need you???

Yes, I agree.

I was shocked to learn that the US is now a net EXPORTER of oil products.

why aren't the libs clamoring for the same solutions as they did in 2008 when they demanded the fed and state guvs to suspend all fuel surcharges and taxes to bring the price down by about a dollar ?

The U. S. Geological Service issued a report in April ('08) that only scientists and oil men knew was coming, It was a revised report (hadn't been updated since '95) on how much oil was in this area of the western 2/3 of North Dakota; western South Dakota; and extreme eastern Montana:

The Bakken is the largest domestic oil discovery since Alaska 's Prudhoe Bay, and has the potential to eliminate all American dependence on foreign oil. The Energy Information Administration (EIA)
estimates it at 503 billion barrels.. Even if just 10% of the oil is recoverable... at $107 a barrel, we're looking at a resource base worth more than $5.3 trillion.

U. S. Oil Discovery- Largest Reserve in the World!
Stansberry Report Online - 4/20/2006

Hidden 1,000 feet beneath the surface of the Rocky Mountains lies the largest untapped oil reserve in the world. It is more than 2 TRILLION barrels. On August 8, 2005 President Bush mandated its extraction. In
three and a half years of high oil prices none has been extracted. With this mother load of oil why are we still fighting over off-shore drilling?

They reported this stunning news: We have more oil inside our borders, than all the other proven reserves on earth. Here are the official estimates:

- 8-times as much oil as Saudi Arabia
- 18-times as much oil as Iraq
- 21-times as much oil as Kuwait
- 22-times as much oil as Iran
- 500-times as much oil as Yemen
- and it's all right here in the Western United States.

HOW can this BE? HOW can we NOT BE extracting this? Because the environmentalists and others have blocked all efforts to help America become independent of foreign oil! Again, we are letting a small group of people dictate Our lives and our economy....WHY?

James Bartis, lead researcher with the study says we've got more oil in this very compact area than the entire Middle East -more than 2 TRILLION barrels untapped. That's more than all the proven oil
reserves of crude oil in the world today, reports The Denver Post.

Do you think 'OPEC' will drop its price - even with this find? Think again! It's all about the competitive marketplace,- it has to. Think OPEC just might be funding the environmentalists? Got your attention/ire up yet? Hope so! Now, while you're thinking about it ... and hopefully P.O'd, do this:

Pass this along to Our other legislators and STOP the hoax of an energy shortage and the need for high gas prices in the name of GREED AND CONTROL!

By the way...this is all true. Check it out at the link below!!!

And that is just the start we have in natural gas 2543 trillion cubic feet of reserves. Plus in coal their are over 250,000 millon short tons in reserves.
All of which could be turned into liquid fuel.

You are flat out ignorant &/or just BALD FACED LIAR.

AP FACT CHECK: IN 36 YEARS OF DATA, NOT A SHRED OF EVIDENCE THAT DRILLING REDUCES GAS PRICES
complete with charts:
"...the Associated Press reports that an analysis of 36 years of Energy Information Administration data shows “no statistical correlation” between domestic oil production and gas prices.

" U.S. oil production is back to the same level it was in March 2003, when gas cost $2.10 per gallon when adjusted for inflation. But that’s not what prices are now.

That’s because oil is a global commodity and U.S. production has only a tiny influence on supply. Factors far beyond the control of a nation or a president dictate the price of gasoline.

When you put the inflation-adjusted price of gas on the same chart as U.S. oil production since 1976, the numbers sometimes go in the same direction, sometimes in opposite directions. If drilling for more oil meant lower prices, the lines on the chart would consistently go in opposite directions. A basic statistical measure of correlation found no link between the two, and outside statistical experts confirmed those calculations..... http://thinkprogress.org/green/2012/03/21/449...

Of course one of the main reasons for that low level for gas prices was the ECONOMIC CRISES Dubya and the war-mongers, and voodoo economists created. Worldwide demand crashed.

THE CHARTS THAT PROVE OBAMA DOESN’T SET GAS PRICES

NY Times pointed out Sunday, facts don’t stop the GOP:

The issue of gas prices has not only been misunderstood but thoroughly distorted by relentless ideological spin from industry and its political allies, mainly Republican. Hardly a day goes by that some industry cheerleader somewhere — be it Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana or Senator James Inhofe of Oklahoma — does not flay President Obama for driving up oil prices by denying the industry access to oil and gas deposits and imposing ruinous environmental rules. Senator John Barrasso, a Wyoming Republican, said last week that Mr. Obama should be held “fully responsible for what the American public is paying for gasoline.”

The Times put together some great charts using EIA data. They make clear 1) oil prices are set on a global market and 2) the strategy of “Drill, Baby, Drill” adopted by the GOP and President Obama has succeeded at increasing production and decreasing dependency on foreign oil — but it has unsurprisingly failed at affecting global markets.... http://thinkprogress.org/romm/2012/03/19/4470...
