Interesting and very precise article. To be much more succinct, which is funny coming from a very verbose person, I'd just say that most of the dysfunction comes from the more extreme ideologies within both major parties who also ostracize those within their ranks that are more flexible; hence, all the centrist are slowly becoming an endangered species. If we as centrist call out both party affiliates in their extremism: bigotry, towing the party line & everyone be damned who doesn't, religious zealots advocating for their own extremes homophobia and condoning gay-bashing or at the other extreme of enabling illegal invaders, etc, the centrist becomes the target of both extremes and portrayed as either being an advocate of illegal invaders (when not). Then if the centrist is OK with gays having the same rights as heterosexual couples, the centrist ends up being jacketed as "gay" even if they're not.

Bottom line is we need more centrist to step into the political arena, if we ever expect to rise above all the dysfunction!!! There are no two ways about it either!

I believe that the biggest reason so much dysfunction was able to continue for so long is because of something you've often pointed out, people have bee too apathetic for much too long. That in itself created the mentality among politicians that people didn't care like they do, so they're bipartisan maneuvering was all for the greater good. They had no concern nor did they ask for their constituents input. They just took matters into their own hands, ans instead of trying to work through differences with those from the opposition, it was just easier to dig their heels in and fight like the Hatfields and McCoys.

The ones that end up losing are all the people in their districts and the nation as a whole. Those that seem to be the only ones benefiting are the illegal aliens.

Much of it is based upon self preservation too. They will bend any way necessary and heavily pimp themselves in order to garner those elusive votes. Add to it voter apathy, and personal arrogance, and there ya have the soup we get in the congressional bowl of mindless ramblings.

Decent but incomplete article failed to point out several factors other major factors.
The loss of the fairness doctrine and the rise of right-wing hate radio.
Media consolidation and the resulting loss of local and independent voices.
Luntz & Ginrich's highly effective approach to messaging....demonizing the Democrats.
Tom DeLay's "K-Street project" which removed any appearance of ethical fund raising behavior.
The impeachment of Bill Clinton
The theft of the 2000 election
The massive increase in inequality which has a negative impact on ALL factors of society.

And the latest assault: The FEAR of unlimited money coming into the campaign because of Citizen's Untied.

Apathy and ignorance is who Americans are. Nothing new to add to the equasion. To me it has been a 35 year plan that was dreamed up in some right wing think tank and I can tell you when it started... many people forget this.

Go back to Nixon and the dirty money that was in politics at the time...the resignation and vulnerability of the elite class at the time....Many times politicians have attempted to do the right thing, like much of the legislation passed after the Great Depression that Ron Reagan shitcanned...BTW.

Public financing of the presidential campaign was instituted in about '75...both Carter VS Ford and Carter VS Reagan public funds were used,,,,no corporate or oligarchy funds!!!

Well obviosly that had to go because they needed to keep the leverag with $...and Reagan was the perfect person to change the dynamic, along with the national debt and wage stagation began at the same time....coincidence? I think not.

Your idiotic response tells me you have no idea what the Fairness Doctrine or Equal Time Rule even was.....what an ignoramous. Typical, to cover up your ignorance, you attack the message.

Hi Roy! Actually I agree with the bulk of your statement; however, let me be clear...it's not always just the Republicans with their agendas. The Democrats are equally as guilty of their own.

A good example which is seldom ever discussed are the "proxy wars" that have occurred under both Democrat & Republican administrations (Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Libya, etc). Both parties are guilty, which is largely why I've never been beholden to any one party. I guess that is where I differ from you, as you tow the Democratic Party's line much of the time. I respect your beliefs; however, I refuse to portray things as all one sided in opposition to the Republicans.

From your list; however, the 2 things that really pissed me off the most was the waste of money & the witch hunt to impeach Clinton and the results of the 2000 election.

Hey, since you've become the perfect fit in the Queen of Forum Bigot's club with all the hearts & positive judge-its & lots of PMs ;-)... you might inform the dumbasses that the moderators are paying attention to the icon manipulation & the hate forums being created to ban the clowns. I'm sure they feel so honored to have you join their little crew...or are hoping you do so. ;-) If you join the dark side, you'll be missed. ;-)

Taxes are the price of civilization.

The most unpatriotic, treasonous and disgusting humans in America are the greedy, ignorant, morally challenged riff-raff of rich people wannabe's, who have helped sell America down the river. Useful idiot Christian right wingers that sold their own children's future to the oligarchy, corporatism and greed of the ruling elite.

I'm just surprised your "jackass" friend isn't calling you an idiot now or trying to label you as "gay" like he is Roy on another forum. No class! With friends like that who needs enemies? So are your eyes opened yet? You'll never fit in with bigots and homophobes. You know that, right?

Who says he hasn't been? He enjoys trolling people, as do so many on these forums. I'm not that fricken naive to trust just anyone.
But you will

That's cause he has no friends. You seem to fit right in with all the topix bigots and there are many as well as homophobes. Pot meet kettle.

Just out of curiosity how would you know if somebody had pm'd someone. Wouldn't that only be known by those involved with the pm's? I certainly don't see how you would be able to find that out unless a moderator tapped into a conversation and provided you that conversation which I would highly doubt.
