"It was impossible to say yesterday whether overheated political rhetoric contributed to the attack on Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, Brown said in an interview."

Then why bother to bring it up in the first place, except to score cheap debating points on your opposition? Loughner is obviously suffering from schizophrenia and I haven't seen any eividence that he was influenced by Palin or the Tea Party or any other boogieman the liberal left loves to hate. Wait a minute, he listed The Wizard of Oz as one of his favorite books- maybe someone on Huffington Post needs to parse it for hidden anti-government messages.

The lefties are not winning in the political arena and will employ whatever it takes. Remember they are the ones who said - never let a good crisis go to waste, if they bring a knife we will bring a gun, etc. The judge killed was a Republican appointee and the Congresswoman a Democrat, only the left jumped to conclusions before any real evidenc was available, maybe they should be the ones to tone it down and act responsibly.

When there was a movie made in 2006 showing how to assassinate President Bush when he was still in office; there was no talk from Senator Brown about toning down political rhetoric. When there was a book published instructing us on how to assassinate President bush; I heard no condemnation from Senator Brown. When the Iraq war protester, Cindy Sheehan, wrote a book; "Peace Mom", about travelling back in time so she could kill former President Bush when he was still an infant; I heard no protest from Senator Brown.

So it seems to me that Senator Brown's words on the tone of political discourse today ring hollow.

Let’s see, the killer listed the Communist Manifesto as a favorite read, posted a video of him burning a flag. Yep.. All the markings of a Tea Party candidate....the things they and Palin speak against that is. Though DailyKos blogger BlueBoy posted just 2 days before that Rep Giffords was DEAD TO HIM, not 1 time, not 2 times but 3 separate times in his screed against her for the audacity of voting against Pelosi for minority leader. The fact that not one bit of evidence has been found linking him to the right whereas most evidence shows he was definitely a leftwing pothead, lets blame Palin. That makes as much sense as blaming the band Drowning Pool since it was there music blaring in the background to his flag burning video with the lyrics “Let the Bodies Hit the Floor” repeated over and over for the tragedy. And then there is the local Community College that had banned him from classes until he had a mental health screening, yet didn’t report him to anyone for possible intervention. And then dating back till 2007, reports of his death threats have surfaced and the inaction by the sheriff who is basking in the spotlight right now spouting off about the right wing rhetoric while trying to hide his culpability in these deaths. And while the MSM is so quick to bring up so called hate speech from the Conservative side, it turns a blind eye and ear to the hate that has been spewing from the left for the last 10 years.

By the way , it wasn't a DEMOCRAT or a LEFTY that jumped to this conclusion, it was the Sheriff that made the comment regarding political rhetoric possibly being an influence on this person. As usual, the media took this and ran w/ it pointing fingers. YOU must have a short memory because if I remember correctly a REPUBLICAN Congressman was the one that yelled out LIAR during a speech by our president. I think only fair that this is mentioned and that we as Americans look at our politicians on both sides and hold them to a higher standard. If they act like this, then IDIOTS will follow.

Mr. Brown, you acknowledge that both sides need to tone it down but you just can't keep yourself from pointing a finger at the other side.

Douch*ebag, do some research about the Sheriff, he is a left-wing Democrat. Google is the dim-witted idiots friend so you would be a good candidate to use it.

Also, some of these clowns on here might want to doa little research on Sarah Palin's "crosshairs" map. The Democratic National Committee website had a similiar map up MONTHS before Palin did. Hey, just like Rahm Emanual said, "Don't ever let a good crisis go to waste".

Thats neither left or right thats common sense.
And neither left, right, or fiat specie can steal it away.

How about we treat the shooter as a true terrorist. He killed 6 people so far and injured 14(allegedly)!!.He has also managed to rile up a whole nation. This is your classic definition of terrorism. Now, what to do about it.How about we waterboard him to find out if there are other ticking time bombs like him out there.Once we've identified those nut jobs, we need to ship them to Alaska and quarantine the whole state.Problem solved, no more crazies among us.!!.

While the guy was crazy - and the heated rhetoric (95% of which comes from the right) - created an atmosphere where the shooting was all but inevitable, the bigger issue here is why this guy had an automatic weapon that he could legally carry concealed. The gun culture is more to be condemnded for this episode than the hate-talk culture. There needs to be a weapons ban on weapons like these that have no legitimate purpose other than to kill lots of people fast; they are not legitimate weapons of self-defense, just of mass murder. The NRA is the true force of evil that stands behind this horrible episode.

The right wing spin machine is nearly spinning out of control. It's almost funny to watch. For anyone to deny that political discourse in this nation couldn't use a little cooling off is clearly mistaken.

However, folks like Brabender, who makes millions by packaging and selling politicians like cans of tuna -- well, they have to protect their turf. What if they couldn't create all those misleading and malignant TV commercials each year? The "consultant class" is at least, if not more guilty of propagating a toxic political environment than are all the Fox commentators combined.

Did the shooter take his marching orders from Sarah Palin or Limbaugh? No. But that does not obviate the fact that the incendiary rhetoric of many right wing politicians and commentators has reached a sad and sour crescendo....

Tell the dems to stop looking for ways to gain points on the blood of Americans and bashing the right for what there left wing not job in Az did. Obama told him and others to bring guns and they are at fault here for one of ther nut jobs and stop projecting on the right and American people so they can pull off their top down and bottom up and inside out Cloward and Pivens distroy the USA.

All these Dems must have gotten the exact same memo on the tragic Arizona shooting. From politicians to lib talkers it’s all the same. Demonize talk radio! Blame conservatives! Quite pathetic. When does "Bush's fault" begin?

He had a Glock pistol. But to the liberal gun grabber any weapon is an automatic. Also he did not have a Concealed Carry Permit since Arizona does not require one.

Ohio Patriot where are your facts to back up your opinion as to where the hate and virtrol is coming from? I have already posted a link to a documented history of over 10 years of progressive hate crimes and vandolism. And get your facts straight on the gun as well. It was Glock 9mm semi-automatic. NOT an automatic weapon, 1 shot fired for each trigger pull, just like the ol 6 shooters used by Wyatt Earp. Also, if it was about Gun control, why shoot a Dem that is against more Gun control? Or the Judge who ruled the Brady Law unconstitutional?

And Piltdown Man, WHICH Side is spinnning? Who's blaming the people not remotely connected to that shooter for his actions? The left in its desire to have it's Reichstag Moment to disarm the populace and silence all critics is the one that is in constant Spin... In all the stories, it is the Right Wing speach, yet was it Palin that told her supporters to take a Gun to a Knife fight? No, that was Obama telling his supporters in Philly to do so... no wonder they dropped the charges on the Black Panthers for taking billy clubs to voting booths.

The left (e.g., Al Sharpton; Reverand Wright) are NEVER Civil. They fight dirty, to win "at all costs" but complain when the Right fights back.

The left / liberals are the ultimate Hyprocrites.

Al Sharpton openly promotes violence with "no justice; no peace."

Jeremiah Wrights says, "God D#@$ America!"

I'm a liberal, and I condemn anything talking about assassinating President Bush. See, that's not so hard.

There have been a bunch of episodes of right-wing violence over the last few years. The head of the Arkansas Democratic party was killed in August 2008, a guy shot up a lefty church in Tennessee in July 2008, a right-wing nut flew a plane into an IRS building in 2010, and another shot up the Pentagon metro station.

If you can find me an example of a liberal killing a conservative, you can claim equivalence.

Seriously. If you spend all your time calling people traitors and tyrants, sooner or later some nut will take you seriously.
