The funds are set aside to pay off the bonds. After all expenses last year the pike only posteda 60 million dollar surplus. If traffic dips, so do revenues, but expenses remain the same. A cash cushion has to be in place.
The PIKE is self sustaining by law and the state of Ohio can not give it money, nor can the PIKE give money to the state.
Good point. There are always those who post here pulling rabbits out of their hats. It is those who are pulling sorta facts out of their asses that creepy. Then they go all "hate" "liar" "loser" when they actually have their pants down and no belt to support pulling them up and securing them. This has got to be more entertaining than Conan or any other currently deemed funny individual.
We should focus on working together to assist in making the wrongs right. It it the ranting and finger pointing on this site that is sad. Get political and do something rather than talk behind closed doors about what you think should be down. If you are educated, you know how it works. Instead, I find most of you wasting work time, pardon me if you are on vacation or pretend disability, wasting time bitching instead of actually showing up and doing something. Been there done that.
Oh, I am braced for the negativity: nuts, spam, off topic, and whatever you may throw. Talk is cheap. get off your collective bitchy asses and do something. Challenge to you challenged.

I think privatizing will surely save the taxpayers money because the no private company can afford to pay the salaries and benefits that the state does. It's unsustainable. I do think the state should stipulate controls on toll increases for X number of years, but since a private company will have lower costs than the state, tolls can stay the same and still provide a good return to the company. Everyone wins: the taxpayers don't have to fund the Turnpike and motorists will get fair tolls. I sure hope that the state can privatize prisons, too.
Do you live in OHIO? The Ohio Turnpike is not funded by taxpayers.

If Dick Solove could make a fortune leasing shopping center space to the likes of Kroger, Big Bear and Walmart, there's no reason the State of Ohio can't make the same kind of fortune leasing a turnpike to a private operator.
Just like Walmart leases space in Hadler's shopping center in Westerville, a turnpike operator will lease our turnpike and probably will do a better job running it!
Get it?
You union leeches think taxpayers exist just to fund $60,000 toll booth positions, and prevailing wage construction contracts. Well, the days of milking the taxpayer are OVER.
STOP TAXPAYER RAPE!
You are still ignoring the facts.

1) Your 'Hero' Dick Solove invested the money to first build or purchase that shopping center.
2) Wal-Mart doesn't "lease" any property. They purchase it. They may lease the land that the building is on, but they own the building.
3) Exactly what is the prevailing wage for a toll booth operator? Since we only have one toll road, what are you comparing their wages to?
4) Prevailing wage construction contracts? You do realize that your 'prevailing wages' are the industry norm. They are required for State contracts to make sure that 'Contractor X' doesn't hire a crew of unskilled illegal aliens for $8.00 an hour in order to under bid 'Contractor Y' who pays $15.00 an hour.

Continue to drink the tea, wave your defend the taxpayer flag, and ignore facts. It just goes to show how ignorant you actually are.

The cashiers in the toll booth make in excess of 55,000 a year for collecting coins. Some made more thanm 80,000 last year.

What cashier at Walgreens makes that kind of money ?

Nope. It's obvious you are. The turnpike is nothing but a road that sits on a piece of real estate. Thus, it is no different than an Airport, railroad tracks, a retail store or a baseball stadium. The turnpike can be leased just like any other piece of real estate.

The old dead Jew was not my hero, but facts are facts. He invested money to build his centers as did the state of Ohio. AFSCME and SEIU didn't invest any money. They have no say in the matter.

Not always true, but whatever. Kroger leases as does Giant Eagle as does Wendy's as does McDonalds as does Kmart.

A toll both operator's salary should be driven by supply and demand. Toll booth operators should not be making #60k.

Riiiigggghhhhtttt. Do you think Casto is forced to pay prevailing wages when they build a shopping center? Of course not. I've built a commercial building before and I know the difference between union and non-union labor. We couldn't have afforded union labor and the non-union guys were adequate for our needs. Point being, in the real world when you build something you are not forced to pay prevailing wages. Prevailing wages are only a RAPE of the taxpayer to put in the pockets of unions.

You ignore facts. The taxpayer's wallet is not the piggybank for unions. STOP TAXPAYER RAPE.
