GOP congressman: Global warming is a liberal plot to 'create global government'

Aug 13, 2013 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: The Daily Caller

California Republican Rep. Dana Rohrabacher told town hall meeting attendees that global warming is a "total fraud" designed to create a global government to "control all of our lives."

These statements are total misrepresentations:

"The Economist reported that “temperatures have not really risen over the past ten years” and that “[o]ver the past 15 years air temperatures at the Earth’s surface have been flat.”

“Since 1998, there has been an unexplained ‘standstill’ in the heating of the Earth’s atmosphere,” BBC News reported in May."

There have been periods of significant Global Cooling in the 20th century:

1918 to 1929 and 1943 to 1949 as presented at:

http://www.nasa.gov/images/content/388674main...

Does that mean that Global Warming stopped? No, not at all. It just means that there is a clear record of pauses - and even declines - Global Warming, but the long term trend is upward. That's what counts.

Looking at the data it is easy to come to the conclusion that global temperatures may drop for another ten years. That does not mean that Global Warming is over, it is just repeating a pattern.

The Republicans are proving that they are anti-science. They take data and warp it to meet their agenda.

I agree but the misrepresentation is that AIR temperature is AGW. AGW means the global average SURFACE temperature is rising. This basic lie is even being parroted by the pro-science posters. PLEASE stop.

We use AIR temperature (only 3% of the total thermal mass) because over the LONG term (thirty year filter) it is reasonably representative of overall warming and because we have a LOT of data on it (meteorology) globally sourced.

There is NO 'pause' in GLOBAL WARMING!!! Dammit There may be short term (<30 year) changes to the AIR temperature at 2 meters (meteorology) data. But that is only a PROXY measure of AGW.

You are correct.

In the future I will distinguish between air temperatures, surface temperatures, and ocean temperatures.

From what I understand 90% of Global Warming is occurring in the oceans.

I have a friend who says that the problem is that, "no matter who you vote for, the politicians get in..".

Myself, I believe that government CAN work, but the powerful don't WANT it to because they want it be their tool.

The grassroots cannot stop it because, as the wealthy continue to assault the working conditions and income of the lower classes, the working classes don't have the time or energy to be involved in politics.

This is particularly the reason for the war on the 'middle class' who were close enough to the grass to see the problems while being wealthy enough to consider doing something about it.

This can ONLY be addressed by taking more from the wealthy which is where the 'tea party' organizes resistance to any move to free up the majority by making it a 'sacred cow' of 'low taxes' while also increasing spending on the military. A win/win for the rich and entitled.

So you end up with a choice between dumb and dumber (both wealthy aristocrats) that will change nothing.

My, somebody is busy throwing mud.

Steven Goddard?, Marc Morano?, Joe Bastardi?, Jo Nova?

LOL. All idiots. Or in the case of Morano, more likely a cynical liar.

Couldn't find a single scientist to quote?

All sources link to scientists and scientific papers. You're just too intellectually lazy to look.

Let's see any of you twinks testify before Congress.

A few months ago I posted a link to the Hansen study referred to in that article and the AGW crowd ignored it. If someone believes in AGW and doubts James Hansen what do they have left ?

From the abstract:

We conclude that recent slowdown of ocean heat uptake was caused by a delayed rebound effect from Mount Pinatubo aerosols and a deep prolonged solar minimum.

The Global Warming Policy Foundation is a bunch of hacks.
For example,
The GWPF presented "900+ Peer-Reviewed Papers Supporting Skepticism Of 'Man-Made' Global Warming (AGW) Alarm." [12]
The blog Carbon Brief analyzed these papers and found that nine of the top ten authors had ties to ExxonMobil. They also discovered that prominent scientists featured on the list didn't agree that their work supported skepticism about anthropogenic global warming.
Additionally, the most-cited journal on the list was Energy and Environment, a journal with a very low impact factor, and whose editors are AGW skeptics.[13]
September, 2012
The Global Warming Policy Foundation published a pamphlet critical of the Stern Review — an influential report on the economics of climate change published in October 2006. The GWPF pamphlet, titled "What is wrong with Stern?", was written by Peter Lilley, the Conservative Party Member of Parliament. Peter Lilley was one of 5 MPs (out of 646) who voted against the UK Climate Change Bill in 2008 which would have set legal targets for reducing emissions.
According to a critical review, the GWPF pamphlet uses a "combination of misrepresentation, bad economics and fundamentally flawed science, and simply recycles erroneous allegations that were made, and debunked, six years ago." A number of experts agree that Lilley's pamphlet makes a number of errors and assumptions in an attempt to make a case against the Stern report.[32]
12."900+ Peer-Reviewed Papers Supporting Skepticism Of 'Man-Made' Global Warming (AGW) Alarm," The Global Warming Policy Foundation, April 14, 2011.
13."Energy and Environment –'journal of choice for climate skeptics' Analysing the 900+ skeptic papers part III", The Carbon Brief, April 21, 2011.
32."Critics of the Stern Review present both a case of bad economics and fundamentally flawed science," London School of Economics and Political Science (Blog), October 3, 2012.

From the abstract:

"While the general relationship between northern warming and Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) volume transport remains undetermined, the meridional heat and salt transport carried by AMOC's arteries are rich with decade-to-century timescale variability."

How much more inconclusive could the article be?

Your sources have zero qualifications in climate science, and zero published scientific papers between them.

All they share is the same extreme political ideology and a history of misrepresenting the real science.

Nope.

Just a graph from NOAA- no reflection.

An honest reflector might wonder how deniers can claim the US is cooling with a graph that shows the hottest temperatures ever in the US instrumental record.
