Oh yeah, let's not have standards for production of our food sources.

Salmonella anyone?

If you buy eggs or meat from a grocery store, you're putting your life at risk.

Shop local small farms where you can see how the animals are raised.

There is no right to sell your crappy infected eggs in California.

If you want to sell a product in California, then you should have to meet the standards of California.

Otherwise sell them in Iowa and kill your own people if they're stupid enough to buy them.

BOYCOTT ALL GROCERY STORE EGGS!!

We used to raise rabbits for meat and chickens for meat/eggs. Nothing better than farm fresh eggs from free range chickens. I still hunt deer for venison. Lower in chlorestoral, leaner, and delicious. We make a nice breakfast venison sausage. Venison burger makes a fine chili too.

I'm sure most local farmers would much rather sell in bulk to retailers than have a constant stream of city folks parking their mini-vans in the front yard, wanting to buy a dozen eggs or asking for a tour of their chicken house. Local farmers are scarce, and farmers with a welcome sign in the front yard are even more scarce.

Wow, I didn't realize you had such a low opinion of farmers.

I grew up on a farm and we welcomed anyone who wanted to buy eggs or were interested in farm practices.

Maybe your attitude explains why the family farm is dying off and being replaced by corporate farms.

Oh well, enjoy your salmonella...

Many small/medium sized towns have local farmer's markets thru the growing season. I'll bet you can even find them in larger metro areas. Ya just gotta look.

Family farms are exempt from salmonella? Must be a progressive thing.

Of course not. They're just less likely to raise animals in conditions which lead to such disease outbreaks. Family farms don't usually cram 10,000 chickens into 12" cages stacked to the ceiling. If they do, then I certainly wouldn't buy eggs from them.

The point being you can usually check out the conditions of a local family farm. If they are resistant to that idea then it's a big red flag to find another farmer.

I agree,'good' farmers should be left out of the regulatory mandates. Bad farmers need far more regulations and inspections.
