House farm bill moves ahead with big cut in food stamps

May 15, 2013 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: Reuters

A Republican-controlled panel in the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday approved the biggest cuts in food stamps for the poor in a generation and a potentially expensive expansion of federally subsidized crop insurance.

"Ya don't work, ya don't eat".

Not if you're a corporation or an Insurance company.

Almost half the savings in the House bill would come from a $20.5 billion cut over 10 years in spending on food stamps for low-income Americans.

While the bill expands crop insurance spending by $9 billion over a decade, it would cut traditional subsidies by $22 billion, according to the Congressional Budget Office. Aides to Agriculture Committee Chairman Frank Lucas said the farm safety net would shrink overall.

Cotton growers would get a special revenue insurance program to replace subsidies that the World Trade Organization says violated trade rules. The government would pay 80 percent of the premium. Peanuts would get a separate revenue insurance program.

"Companies underwriting federal crop insurance are likely to be among the major beneficiaries of the new farm bill when it becomes law," said analyst Mark McMinimy of Guggenheim Washington Research Group.

Hungry? Food stamps running low?

Grow a garden for your poor hungry children and preserve it.
Obtain canning supplies fr Thrift Stores by the dozen for pennies.

Places to grow (when you're poor and don't have acres):
1. Balcony/patio in lg containers (also made cheap via carboard boxes lined with garbage bags and dirt poured in).
2. What little yard you might have.
3. An abaandoned lot (with permission), and perhaps invite another family to share that lot with you.

Stop looking to the government to keep you alive. It's very sad they've groomed a mindless zombie they now must feed, but they don't really care about you and FOOD STAMPS isn't going to FIX what is wrong with your life.

A good idea and nothing wrong with that but guess who you're buying your seeds from?

Monsanto is one of the "Big 6" Biotech Corporations, along with BASF, Bayer, Dow Chemical Company, Dupont, and Syngenta (so called because they dominate the agricultural input market -- that is, they own the world’s seed, pesticide and biotechnology industries).
Monsanto came under heavy public fire with the development of their "Terminator Technology", a.k.a. "suicide seeds", known technically as V-GURTs (varietal Genetic Use Restriction Technologies) in which the seeds resulting from the first year's planting would be sterile thereby forcing farmers around the world in the Roundup Ready System to buy their seed from them every year rather than saving their best seed for the next years planting, a traditional and economical practice . Seed saving has had the benefit of allowing farmers to continually improve the quality of their crops through careful artificial selection.

The Supreme Court ruled unanimously on Monday that farmers could not use Monsanto’s patented genetically altered soybeans to create new seeds without paying the company a fee.

Farmers who buy Monsanto’s patented seeds must generally sign a contract promising not to save seeds from the resulting crop, which means they must buy new seeds every year. The seeds are valuable because they are resistant to the herbicide Roundup, itself a Monsanto product.

Monsanto sued, and a federal judge in Indiana ordered Mr. Bowman to pay the company more than $84,000. The United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, which specializes in patent cases, upheld that decision, saying that by planting the seeds Mr. Bowman had infringed Monsanto’s patents.

The US House of Representatives quietly passed a last-minute addition to the Agricultural Appropriations Bill for 2013 last week - including a provision protecting genetically modified seeds from litigation in the face of health risks.

The rider, which is officially known as the Farmer Assurance Provision, has been derided by opponents of biotech lobbying as the “Monsanto Protection Act,” as it would strip federal courts of the authority to immediately halt the planting and sale of genetically modified (GMO) seed crop regardless of any consumer health concerns.

So the heirloom 'non-GMO' seeds I've purchased from Canadian farms are of no use to me, then?

Uh, and that would be from PRIVATELY owned farms, not corporate...

And it does make me hurl that Monsanto is capable of claiming your bumper crop of 12lb winter squash is actually an amalgamation of their intellectual property, through no fault of your own, ergo you are not entitled to the profits or use of said crop, nor the seeds... and if you fight them, you can lose a half a million dollar farm you fought to keep going all your life, because of corporate hucksterism.

Collective farming in China killed millions of people. Democrats are idiots and need to be subdued in every way.. IRS targeting won't help their criminal activities in this department, unless the democrats target conservative farmers with audits and penalties to push them out so they could put a Democrat in. It's time to punish all democrats for being blatantly stupid as to what their criminal leaders are doing.

Monsanto Co. said Wednesday it bought a smaller biotech research company that is developing a technology to kill crop pests while protecting the health of bees.

Monsanto, the world's biggest seed company, did not disclose terms of the deal to buy the company, called Beeologics.

Monsanto develops genetically engineered strains of corn and soybeans that grow their own pesticides. The company said it will use Beeologics's technology to develop new crops, but it didn't elaborate.

Monsanto is considered the mother of agricultural biotechnology. The company produces biotechnology, genomics and herbicides for corn, cotton, oil seeds, and vegetables. It produces genetically altered seeds to tolerate it's flagship product, Roundup. Monsanto also produces Asgrow, DEKALB, Deltapine, and Seminis seeds. Other products have included Agent Orange, the now ubiquitous PCBs, DDT, Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH) and Aspartame.

GMO Pollen is a POLLUTANT, not merely a pest.
GMO Pollen is being protected by ALEC and ALEC legislators and this has to stop.
ALEC is another name for pro-corporate legislation / regulation.

Agri-business is just another name for corporate farming and it needs to be stopped
–before all crops are cross pollenated with GMO and
–no independent farmers exist because all their seeds, crops and farms have been hi-jacked/stolen by Monsanto.

This bill has little to do with farms. 2/3 of it is welfare to loser low information voters.
