Full story: Chicago Tribune

Congress wants to give the government a direct role in deciding how much executives on Wall Street are paid, after the nation's biggest banks accepted billions in taxpayer money and still managed to distribute $1 million bonuses to thousands of employees.

Well bring it on Congress! Way to go--it's high time you cretins finally got off your hard-working butts and did something constructive for a change--but don't stop there. Let's cap Congressional salaries at $50,000 that should be plenty to live on--I make less and doing just fine. Then...let's see--actors in Hollywierd like George Looney and Sean Penn-laden should be limited to $100,000 a picture--should be plenty! Think of how much cheaper ticket prices would be for us poor flesh-and-blood creeps who support them. And there's more!: all those over-paid crybabies in sports...think of how much less we'd pay at the gate if they were capped at $249,999.99 that way they could still live pretty high on the hog..but just like the Community-Activist-In-Chief promised their taxes would not go up one dime--several thousand dollars, of course, but not a dime. And please have Barney Fwank, Nancy Pulousy, Chris Do-Do, Dick Turban, Henry Waxperson, and John Conyers, et.al reduce their carbon footprints by checking in at the Gray Bar Hotel at Fort Levenworth--I bet the military budget would skyrocket then! Gitmo would be nice for them too so they could room with their Al-Quida buddies--great medical care, seven-per-day prayer services and chicken la-orange every Sunday...what a deal. Liberals could also get end-of-life counciling starting at age 25 to help reduce their carbon footprints as well...that would solve most of our problems.

Congress f'd up by passing the TARP programs. Now they're f'ing up by creating a Fascist controlled economy.

Government control + private ownership = Fascism by definition

This doesn't happen under a Constitutional government.

Ah yes, the governement should regulate salaries of the Wall Street slimeball, scumbag, lying overpaid parasites........BUT, they are the only group that has a higher public approval rating than Congress (Barney, Nancy, Harry, etc.)

Perhaps Barney should propose legislation that states until the public approval rating of Congress is at least 50.1 %.....(currently at 17%)...no one in Congress, including their staffer....draws one dime of salary.

How about it Bawney?

I don't think that congress or the president should be able to set anyones wages in this country. If a company is working off of the tax payers then there should be a cap with no bonuses.
By the way, when these companies show a profit just where is our cut?

"The effect will be to force 'financial institutions who did not contribute to the crisis to pay for the mistakes of others,' said Rep. Michael Castle, a Republican."

... funny, isn't that the same excuse the banks use to charge credit card customers higher interest rates, to cover for the bad ones?

i think something needs to be done. inaction is not an option. it just would be nice if this legislation had an expiration date on it (like our food is required to have), then they can assess the success/failure of it later & let it expire, renew it or revise it as needed.

I agree. They should have just let the banks fail and let us slide into a 1930's panic and crash.

Seems like the money would have been better spent invading some country and occupying them for years.

That being said, there really needs to be more oversight in these bailout programs.

More than a little alarmed that the citizens of this great country are so willing to allow the government to have this much control over their lives. Let the brain drain commence as all these folks go elsewhere for employment so that they can earn what they are worth without the government telling them otherwise. Citibank is already seeing the outflow of knowlegable and experienced staff who don't want to put up with the BS.

I'm sure the right wing (I'll kill myself for the corporations) will spin this as "socialism", I prefer to call it "civilized restrictions on greed"

A new poll shows that 80% of Americans would stop breathing, to help the rich get richer

78 percent of Americans would rather die a terrible death that leaves their families bankrupt than have the elite pay higher taxes for government health care.

67 percent of Americans would saw off their left foot to have a Wal-Mart built next door to them;

62 percent of Americans would shoot themselves in the head if it meant the richest Americans would receive a tax break, and;

59 percent of Americans would rather see tax money given to banks, or used to kill Middle Easterners than have the same money used on health care in the U.S.

Better late than never, I suppose. But where was the oversight when TARP was handed out in the first place?? It went right into the greedy pockets of the people who started this mess. Remember, they even redecorated their offices with our money.

Put restrictions on their salaries? How about jail time for the greedy bastards who we (conveniently) hear nothing about anymore?! Was anyone ever punished for what they did?

No, they'll (Washington) always take care of their own. They don't want to bite the hand that feeds them.

Man- you people don't get it? When the government starts putting restrictions on what private citizens can earn- how long before it affects you? Sure these CEO's are overpaid- but that has nothing to do with the government. The stockholders of a company can vote out a CEO and they can offer lesser salaries when they hire for the position. THE GOVERNMENT DOES NOT CREATE JOBS! That is not their role. We used to be a capitalistic society where the sky was the limit. Now a person makes too much money- based on whose standards, by the way, and the government says -"No!"? What incentive will there be for hard working people to start new businesses if the government is going to restrict salaries, excessively tax, etc. Companies will begin incorporating overseas at a much quicker rate than they are already as well as the jobs that they create!
