House OKs debt-ceiling bill; Senate scuttles it | The Columbus Dispatch

Full story: Columbus Dispatch

House Speaker John Boehner persuaded weary fellow Republicans yesterday evening to approve a bill that would allow the federal government to avoid a default next week in return for deep cuts in federal spending and congressional approval of a balanced-budget amendment to the Constitution.

The bottom line here is that the government needs to shut down. What department if the government runs effeciently, effectively, or responsibly? Everything the government engages is doomed. They have wasted our money and have put us in this situation. There's only one way to fix this problem and that's to cut spending whether anyone likes it or not. The people voted these thieves in for years and they were never kept in check. The government has no business handling programs like social security and health care because they a) don't know how, and b) can not resist the lure of all that money to be misused, misspent, and wasted. If entitlements have to be cut, then do it. Government salaries and pensions should be drastically cut too. It IS the only way out. Everything else is a temporary fix.

The democrats will submit a bill at the last minute and then run around crying "the sky is falling, the sky is falling" you must vote for this, you must or we default. If you don't vote for this the sky will fall, the sky will fall and it will be your fault. Idiots,I hope the republicans counter with "we submitted a plan last week outlining what we will agree to, you democrats killed it without discussion." now go pound sand!

PS. Catch that sky when it falls!

OK. I will bite.

1. Please name the one government in all history that operated "effeciently, effectively, or responsibly" in your opinion.
2. Given the recent destruction of the 401k's, people going bankrupt and not getting adquate care, etc it seems that private industry does not know how to handle either retirement or healthcare either.

Very STUPID idea.
He he he

when you're going have the lights turned off, be evicted and your broke azz hiding from bill collectors on Tuesday.....

6 more months looks very good....

if the congressional leaders, members of the House and Senate...along with the President had began these debates and negotiations 6 months ago.....

this situation could have been avoided......

do you really think a GOOD solution will be reached in the next 3 days........

read a real newspaper wrote:
“We have changed the nature of the discussion in Washington from increased taxes to cutting government spending,” Tiberi said.
"We're about screwing over seniors and the poor, gutting needed investments, dismantling crucial protections and taking care of the rich," he went on. "Clowns. Criminals. Sociopaths. Buffoons."
"But the good news is we can count on a cozy right-wing Jack Torry, a lying extremist in Glenn Sheller, and the full backing of the owner of this Ugly Little Paper as we go out and prove that today's GOP has no interest in governing."

Enough children! Keep the country out of default. Compromise necessary from both sides. Stop logrolling a debt ceiling, closing tax loopholes, restoring taxes to 2000 levels, a balanced budget amendment to the United States Constitution, spending cuts, and God know what else into a simple debt ceiling vote. Up or down people. How hard is that? The American people are fed up with this dithering Congress. If you vote against raising the debt ceiling or fail to do anything, a pox on you and your house! You will face the consequences in the next election which is a little over a year away.
By the way, it is the Democratic Party, not the Democrat Party you Limbaugh lovers.

The Democrats are defending the people on Social Security, and the Republicans are defending Wall Street. Both will be hurt if no action is taken. Our political leaders are truly the most brilliant men and women on this earth. We need to vote every one of them out of office regardless of party. I have come to believe the old saying. How can you tell a politican is lying? His lips are moving.

Raise the debt ceiling. Take it beyond 2012 so that we don't have this idiotic posturing to go through yet again prior to the Nov. 2012 elections. Tell both parties to stop dragging the country down for politics, and start solving the real crisis - jobs and economy.
They've screwed the economy, and/or the market, several times since 2000, and they are doing it yet again. None of these clowns are representing us, least of all the Republicans. Some 70% of Americans understand revenues and TAXES are going to have to be part of the solution. About time our so-called representatives learn to read, not to mention think, and stop catering to a small-brain large-mouth minority.

This all makes me embarrsased that I used to vote democratic but ever since Obama got elected and we had all democratic senators and reps I have seen what they are all about, they're not about our country theyre about money and power and lies and brainwashing. Here's where they are smart, they know their followers are stupid and will beleive anything they say, well not me any more I see them for what they are. They were in power, the republicans had none, and for 2 years they did nothing, first group ever to not have a budget, but of course no one talks about that now, its all the republicans fault and people like Harry Reed point the finger to the republicans and say they are the ones stopping things but I see they finally gave him something last night and he says its dead on arrival and the news people just act like yes thats ok and ignore that the democrats wouldnt even vote on what John Boener gave them, so who's really the liars? Seems to me that the liars are the ones that had 2 years to get things straight but instead created all this mess and then point the finger to the repoublicans and blame them just like my daughter that spills the milk and then points her finger to her brother, but the only difference is my daughter is a baby and Harry Reed and Obama are sick lying adults that should know better. How can they lie like that. Sometimes I think I was happier when I was a democrat that didn't know what was going on and thought everything they said on the news was true, now I see how they tell lies and give people the wrong impresson of whats going on, and can care less about truth. I will never ever vote for a democat again no matter what. Please people I beg you stop fighting and forget whatever personal gain you have if a democrat is paying you off and help save us before we sink.

If President Obama signs or allows ANY Debt Ceiling Increase that is for less than 18 months we will have this republicaNO fillibuster hanging over our heads come election day 2012! The republicaNO plan is to ensure that their 7000+ millionaire supporters WHO PAY NO TAXES--Keep On, Keepin On! It is sad that the republicaNOs have allowed the main party to be taken over by the "Pee Potty" who want everything that goes to Medicare and Social Security to be divided up among the 7000+ millionaires who PAY NO Taxes! I have received E-Mail from my Credit Union cautioning me not to expect any payments to my account for my military retirement, Social Security adfter 02-August 2011 and that my "No Bounce " checking account is only good up to $500.00! Thanks a lot--senator portman and representaive gibbs!!!!! If you come to south eastern Ohio--I will be there to talk with you!

1) Raising taxes on the rich will only cover something like 10 days of the current deficit spending.
2) Checks will still go out, they would just have to prioritize payments, we would only default if they choose to. Not raising the debt limit does not mean default it just means government will have to deal with the spending issue instead of pushing it down the road.

But we will have a technical default regardless as the FED prints money. The world will not continue to fund our government's spending spree.
