Yet another government program that pats itself on the back for saving the environment but in reality fixes nothing. This program pays people for buying new cars that they would have already bought.

What the government should have done is not give the billions they did to the automakers. Instead, they should have given that money in rebates to the consumers who purchased fuel efficient vehicles. That way the consumer decides which automaker survives and who doesn't.

Government gone amuck!

The car makers got enough of a bailout already. What good is this program if the US automakers are still making cars that don't compete?

Start making some decent products, and the industry will take care of itself ---- or not.

Get Nancy Pelosi involved in anything and it'll be a guaranteed disaster.

This is a way for people with beat up second cars to get a new primary car. I hear this program is loaded with fraud on the part of some dealers.

A 2006 DOT study found that there were 250,851,833 registered passenger vehicles in the United States with a median life of 8.9 years.

250,851,833 cars / 8.9 years life span = 28,185,599 cars normally leave the streets every year

28,185,599 / 365 days = 77,220 cars normally leave every day

$4,500 government money x 77,220 cars normally leave the road =$347,493,688 of funding every day for cars that would normally leave the road

$1,000,000,000 funding for program /$347,493,688 every day = 2.9 days

The funding should have lasted for 2.9 days. If the funding lasted 6 days then ZERO cars were taken off the road as a result of this program. And they call this program a success??? Is my math wrong or is our government really that blind??

Its like offering gold to a starving man. Why not give everyone a $4500 rebate for necessities like food.

You assume that every car is eligible to be a clunker. I have a 10 year old Jetta that still gets 20 mpg MORE than the rate they call a clunker. There are more strict rules than just age involved.

Q. Can the credit be applied to any new vehicle?

Answer: All imports and domestics with a list price under $45,000 are eligible, as long as they meet fuel economy standards of at least 22 m.p.g. for cars, 18 m.p.g. for SUVs, small pick-ups and minivans, and 15 m.p.g. for large vans and trucks. The new vehicle must exceed the trade-in by at least 4 m.p.g. for cars, 2 m.p.g. for SUVs and 1 m.p.g. for large trucks to qualify for the $3,500 rebate. The full $4,500 rebate kicks in at an increase of 10 m.p.g., 5 m.p.g. and 2 m.p.g., respectively.
