Levin bill requires 10 years of tax returns for presidential candidates

Jul 19, 2012 Full story: www.dailytribune.com 16

Pouncing on the controversy over Mitt Romney’s resistance to release multiple tax returns, U.S. Rep. Sander Levin has prepared legislation that would require presidential candidates to release 10 years of income tax returns and to disclose overseas financial accounts.

The bill, an amendment to the Ethics in Government Act of 1978, comes on the heels of Romney, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee, standing firm and saying he will only add to his previous release of his 2010 IRS return the disclosure of his 2010 return when it is complete.

Lets amend this politically motivated amendment to include school records, long form birth certificates, and billing records if the candidate and/or their wife was a lawyer.

What is a "long form" birth certificate? There's nothing long about my birth certificate.

That is the original certificate with original signatures upon which some computer generated certificates are based.

The bill should apply to all members of congress as well.

Nice to see our highly paid representatives working to solve our enormous economic problems rather than playing silly partisan political games.

Of course, if they simply only played their silly little games and didn't F with the country, we'd be in far better shape.

I have my original birth certificate from 1958. It's about 8x5, has a state notary seal, and that' s it. My son's is from 1986. Nothing long or special about it. Maybe some states put out "long" forms, but I think you're blowing smoke.

If you have so much time to worry about Obama's birth certificate, why not put that energy into concentrating on something truly beneficial to yourself and others.

I just have one birth certificate too and did not know anything about this long form short from stuff until I saw Obama's he has posted two different ones.

I guess it went over your head so I will explain, the original snide comment of mine was not directed at birth certificates but about a legislator proposing an amendment which was taylor made only to attack a specific presidential candidate. If Romney was hiding birth certificates and Obama was hiding Tax Returns then the amendment would have been about birth certificates.

“He should release the tax returns tomorrow. It’s crazy. You’ve got to release six, eight, ten years back tax returns. Take the hit for a day or two. He has to give a big speech in defense of capitalism, and that will elevate, I think, this race above this tactical back and forth, which I do think he’s on the margin of losing.”

A birth certificate and tax returns are apples and oranges. It is highly unlikely that Obama was able to get this far in life with a fraudulent birth certificate. The whole birther thing has been silly from day one.

But if someone is a tax evader, that says something about how they would treat the American people. If that person is so selfish and egotistical that they think they shouldn't have to pay what they owe while everyone else has to, that's not someone I want making decisions for ME.

But, I'll agree with you. There should be transparency with all candidates. It's not right that these people want to lead us but don't want us knowing who or what they are.

It is just political, I kind of doubt the Obama campaign and media is going to find anything in his tax return that the IRS missed. Of course maybe I am wrong it seems Obama has more people in his administration that knows about not paying taxes than Romney.

Same with NYS in the 1940's.

It is "long form bullshit."

However, Mr Romney did file a "long form 1040" and we don't know if it too was bullshit.
Show us Mr Romney.
