Note that almost all these right-wing candidates get heavy funding from the coal, oil and electric power industries, and nearly all come from states with strong ties to those industries: Alaska, West Virginia, Kentucky, etc.
Even in my state of Washington, the Republican candidate's checkered political career has been marked by major support from Big Oil. Like all the other Crude Republicans, he denies climate cooking. Might have something to do with the oily tit in his mouth.

The 'tea party' movement is 'astroturf' with backing both by media, lobbying, organization and funding by big oil ( Kock Brothers in particular).
It had no real existence until they took a hand through their political wing(s).
