Senators want to stamp out 'shoe tax' | The Columbus Dispatch

Full story: Columbus Dispatch

U.S. consumers would see a sharp drop in the price of imported shoes - and that's nearly all shoes sold in the United States - if a bipartisan group of senators is successful in stamping out the nation's "shoe tax." "It is kind of a hidden tax, and getting rid of it would be nice to do," Democratic Sen.

"...given their preoccupation with war, the economy..."

Yes, please stop worrying these "minor" issues and worry about shoes.

I was just thinking to myself "Gee, why haven't we been deluged with cheap foreign-made shoes?". Made In USA? pffft. If you can't keep up get out of the street.

I for one like to buy American made shoes. New Balance still makes them in the USA, but if this passes I don't see that happening. Yet more jobs are headed to China. When will it end?

How about proposing an INCREASE in the tax and maybe we can encourage an AMERICAN company or two to begin production here. I really doubt that most Americans want a global economy that seems to rule every business/marketing decision made here.

I agree with you...we need to bring back our manufacturing base. This is what created the middle class in the USA. Besides does one really think that if this tax is eliminated the shoe companies will lower their prices. Nope, they'll just pocket the difference and pay their CEO's more money.

Feds are broke, and our leader's idea is to lower taxes on imported goods while wanting to increase income taxes.

How did this country survive for close to 150 years without the income tax?

It is clear our leaders no longer work for us - they are all part of the globalists.

In case you haven't noticed the Human Race is all on one planet and having 196 separate countries sure isn't getting things done.

Here's a better idea ...

1.) Impose MASSIVE tariffs on imported shoes.

2.) Also keep the "tax" in place long enough to create a stimulus fund to be used SOLELY to incentivize the recreation of the American shoe industry.

While consumers might continue to pay the higher prices for a while, if we can revive the U.S. shoe industry it will lead to jobs, lower prices, and FINALLY WE WILL BE ABLE TO AGAIN BUY SHOES THAT ACTUALLY FIT CORRECTLY !!!

My shoe size, pants size, shirt size, etc., have not changed for more than 30 years yet I cannot buy ANY new clothing in my size that fits me (correctly). Going up or down a size doesn't work either ...

Gosh, wait til President Obama hears about this. He'll be very angry. He will probably say it would reduce federal revenue. He never saw a tax he didn't want to raise (or at least keep). It's one reason unemployment is so fouled-up in America and the economic recovery is so dismal.

Wasn't this duty on shoes sought by union shoemakers to protect against foreign competition as the price of shoes was going up? Obama always walks with the unions, if you track his footprints.

Daily Horoscope for May 25

Libra

You have a tremendous amount of nervous energy today and you need to find positive ways of expressing it, otherwise it could make you rather irritable and restless. Ideally, you should do something physical, such as going for a brisk walk, cleaning the house while working up a sweat or getting your money's worth out of the gym. Don't take out your frustrations on people who don't deserve them.
