The national Chamber of Commerce is more powerful politically than a 16 year old girl. some members of the C of C don't agree with the others. and on the local level, a C of C is more interested in promoting buying at local stores, which is a sensible project.

Detroit: The Triumph of Progressive Public Policy

http://www.mackinac.org/article.aspx...

Imagine a city where all the major economic planks of the statist or "progressive" platform have been enacted:

* A "living wage" ordinance, far above the federal minimum wage, for all public employees and private contractors.

* A school system that spends significantly more per pupil than the national average.

* A powerful school employee union that militantly defends the exceptional pay, benefits and job security it has won for its members.

* A powerful government employee union that does the same for its members.

* A tax system that aggressively redistributes income from businesses and the wealthy to the poor and to government bureaucracies.

Would this be a shining city on a hill, exciting the admiration of all? We don't have to guess, because there is such a city right here in our state: Detroit

Detroit has been dubbed "the most liberal city in America" and each of these "progressive" policies are alive and well there. How have they worked out?

In 1950, Detroit was the wealthiest city in America on a per capita income basis. Today, the Census Bureau reports that it is the nation's 2nd poorest major city, just "edging out" Cleveland.

Could it be pure coincidence that the decline occurred over the same period in which union power, the city government bureaucracy, taxes and business regulations all multiplied? While correlation is not causation, it is striking that the decline in per capita income is exactly what classical economists predict would occur when wage controls are imposed and taxes are increased.

Your ignorant comments are not appreciated. Unions are the backbone of manufacturing in the United States. Without union quality and union labor, this country would be no more than a third world nations.

Would you agree or disagree that present day Unions today go against what they were originally intended for, when they were first created?
I think labor Unions were great, however Unions today have gotten so powerful & political. They have lost there intended purpose. Unions today do more HARM than good!!
I remember working for a company a number of years ago when I was 28 yrs old. I was training in a new guy. I was showing him around the warehouse, and what certain tools were used for, and showing him the functions and duties and whats expected.
Then I remember immediately getting called into managements office,....... saying well nothing personal against you, but since you are "NON-UNION" several UNION members filed a grievance against you. Never mind the fact that I worked for this company for 10yrs and knew the job inside and out and could of trained ppl in my sleep. The fact remained that I was "NON-UNION" and UNION members wanted only "UNION" members to train ppl in. AT the time I just didnt get it and couldnt understand what I did wrong. Then somebody explained how UNIONS work, no matter how counter productive something is, or how inexperienced somebody is, or how ridiculous something may sound, being a UNION MEMBER is only thing that matters. Its not about what works best for the company, you must be a UNION member.

With all due respect, my friend, you don't back anything
you say up with anything. I will try this again, and ask
you where you think I am wrong.

As I said to you once before, I have been in 4 unions: the
grocery union, the postal union (APWU), the Teamsters, and
the Guild. All 4 places I worked have either folded, are
in constant financial trouble (the Post Office), or have
had massive layoffs due to wages and work rules. Again,
in all 4 jobs the biggest obstacle I faced in advancing, in
either position or wage, was the UNION not management or
the company. There aren't enough characters on this site
or hours in the day to go over the examples of mine and
people I worked with. Forget politics,(even though the
unions are getting in too deep in that area) simply trying
to work in the environment they create is brutal. I am a
believer in collective bargaining of wages and benefits,
as there is strength in numbers, but after that the work
should be all that matters not how long someone has been
there or who they support for steward, and you know exactly
what I am talking about.

Now, will you address these answers to your post, or will
you just ignore everyone who challenges your ideology as
you so often do? I am really interested.

Daily Horoscope for January 7

Sagittarius

If you have any worries or problems today, a close colleague could have the answers you seek. Work will be satisfying, and anything to do with children should be very rewarding today. There could be friction with a relative, but it's nothing serious and things will sort themselves out in due course. Again, you must pay attention to your health, Saggitarius: skin infections are a strong possibility at the moment.
