One need only need to look at the failure of the Prohibition legislation in the 1920s to realize that mandatory attempts to change human behavior will not work, no matter how well intentioned. So it is with the War on Drugs--it is bound to fail even as we pour plane loads of money into it. The profit motive will not be denied--look at what is happening in Juarez today with the deadly cartel turf battles. Our imprisonment of petty dealers and users are contributing to the over-burdening of the penal system, a waste of human lives and more money. Education and programs to intervene in drug use here at home are the only alternatives left to us. Let's try putting those plane loads of money into domestic programs to curtail our own society's hedonistic use--call it legalization if you will. We must take a different approach.
