Let's build a fence around the slow moving lawmakers instead.

The turtle fence should be put up around the State Capital while all the lawmakers and shakers are stuck in there together until they get the budget balanced.

While they are at it - First, take care of those who are in danger - children or elderly who are living with abusive family members: tighten up the screening process for foster-care homes so the most vulnerable of our citizens don't go from one bad situation to another; more money should go to social service organizations to increase caseworkers - get everyone fed, clothed, and in safe living situations - and reasonable health might be a concept to consider.

Children cannot be expected to go to school, and be mentally and emotionally fit to learn anything if they are living in fear of what is going to happen when they get home.

Take care of these basic needs first and then educate them. Get our priorities straight. A person living in fear is unable to concentrate on anything beside the fear with which they are living.

The schools keep yammering and whining about more and more funding so teachers can be paid more and they can have their retirement funds and medical insurance.

All the money in the world thrown at schools will do no good if the students are unable to learn due to their home and/or family situations. Are our public schools in business for the benefit of the students or the administrators and teachers?

I just love seeing that our government is on a temporary operating budget with funding to childrens services, education, and anything that matters cut but we can spend that kind of money on a fence that won't last the winter,,,, it is temporary fencing for that amount of money? Whatever the heck is in Granholms head I don't know but it sure is not the brains she professed to have. I for one was stupid enough to vote for her the first time,,, you can be sure there won't be a second. The State of Michigan will have the dumbest kids in the nation with all the funding cuts but by god,,,, we will have big turtles..... WAKE UP GOVENOR!!!

FYI; this wasn't her first term. She cannot run again. Let's just keep our fingers crossed that our beautiful state is still here by the time she is out.

Lets see now. The MDOT is using money for a turtle fence project that is designated for such a use and can't be used for funding road construction or other repair work. MDOT has a partnership with the Muskegon Watershed Assembly who is throwing in $40,000 of the total project cost. The fencing goes through the Muskegon State Game Area- so the DNR gets something out of this (the protection of rare species) without having to spend what little money they have for the protection of biological diversity. The fence design is optimized to prevent turtles from climbing over, or digging under the fence it. The MDOT also contacted state experts to collect information and make suggestions on on to proceed with project. Gee, I guess they really did not think this through very well did they? From the few facts presented in all but a few of the newspaper articles, I can see why there are so many people with the wrong impression. Seems like someone did not want a few good facts to ruin a otherwise good news story.

Global warming has cause these South American species to migrate north. We need to place the fence at the Mexican boarder.

Did everyone here miss the part where it was an environmental earmark, not tax payer money? It couldn't have been spent on the auto industry, it couldn't have been spent on education, and I don't know what Michigan has to do with Iraq, but it couldn't have been spent on that either, the only person on here who pays attention at all is Give Me A Break, from Rockford, please people, educate yourselves...
