I agree completley with Congressman Hoekstra, could our money not go to something that would help prepare the state for an econimical rebound. I'm not in Government but I would put my money on the answer being yes it could. The tax payer just suffered and watch the news with the budget crisis, and saw thier taxes increase for what a turtle fence. I understand the willingness and need to protect certain species but what I don't understand is why this fence now and not next year after the budget is fixed and the state is on the climb. This doesn't make sense to me.

Ol Pete is up to it again. Looks like he's more concerned with the states turtles than the states kids. Go figure.

Once again it is about waste in spending in all budgets. Like the CMU professor making $60,000+ working at the University for one day a week. See www.Petersreport.blog.com for review of the outrage. I am spending money out of pocket for my kid's college at state university. Go ahead, look at it, I dare you! Socialists would not see the truth if it bit them. Keep cutting the budget! Shame on Jen!

This is utterly unbelievable and if it wasn't so stupid, it would be laughable. Why, who wouldn't love having their taxes raised immensely so they can protect turtles while Washington offers it's profound and concerned help. Awesome priorities and dedication by both 'haven't a clue' individuals...

Of course we should be taking budgetary advice from the party that has almost doubled our federal debt in the last seven years. Republicans are having their fun taking potshots at the governor and the Dems in Michigan but it masks the fact that they don't have a clue what to do either.
Maybe Pete should be more concerned with the $2.5 trillion price tag your kids and grandkids are going to pay for Bush's war without end. Be very afraid!!!! Only the Republicans can save you!!!

why doesn't the state use the turtle fence money for healthcare for the uninsured in this state. I work full time but connot afford health care insurance for myself. Cut the useless spending.

As soon as I finish my 12 pack I'm gonna go start up a 'who needs turtles anyways' committee. Who want's in?

Nice to see Hookerstra concerned about us spending $30 k on a fence but rubber stamp uncountable billions for Iraq.

Isn't it typical of Granholm, when confronted about an issue, to quickly try and point the finger of blame somewhere else? Does she not understand that this is the classic behavior of a guilty person?

I agree with Pete.

Hey MEI- last I checked turtles have nothing to do with the Iraq war. Please explain to me how this fence is beneficial to the people of our state.

Hey everyone - we the people put individuals in office to do their job to the best of their ability. Don't be fooled by this political reterick. This proposal to install fencing to devert the transit of turtles was sought after long ago, and by people we put in place to protect our families and the wildlife using the available means and resource to achieve success. This money is better spent on protecting our wildlife rather than any beautification type spending for regional road ways. Money is allocated for different types of reasons. People in Govn planning and management know this and funding is not permitted to be cross spent with other catagorys in different offices. This is just a means to promote ones self to look good in the lime light of media to the public.

I can't believe our lousy state is spending $318,000 on a turtle fence. Every person who authorized this needs to be fired immediately. It's beyond insane that we taxpayers have to pay for waste like this! I demand a refund!

She can fire back a response to a letter about turtles but you certainly don't see her responding to the thousands of people that wanted her and the rest of those Michigan legislature to take a paycut and quit screwing us!! Jennifer...GO BACK TO CANADA!!

Matt,
Turtles have nothing to do with the Iraq war, true. But neither did Iraq have anything to do with 9/11 - but Republicans want us to be very afraid and keep funding wars against the bogeyman. The turtle fence money was earmarked for environmental concerns in the state - if it wasn't going to be spent on that (and helping cut down on accidents when cars swerve to miss turtles in the road)it would have been spent on controlling beach erosion or something else.
The greater point is that Pete's got nerve telling anyone how to spend money when his party can't reign it in.

I just want to know when 2 miles worth of fence started costing $318,000... even taking into consideration the labor to install it... come on. That's outrageous. And why does the fence need to be 4 fricking feet tall? I've never seen a turtle jump, nor have I seen one in Michigan big enough to get over a fence half that size... Furthmore, it's only 2 miles long... who's to say the turtles won't just go around the thing... they are on the move to migration after all... they have to go somewhere. Is this just the first step in what will become a fence along the entire shoreline? Then what? Does Lansing ever think anything through?

MEI, you are dealing with relativism. You are not arguing the point. In a budget crisis we need to better use the resources we have.

BUSH'S WAR? You are the one with out a clue. The war was started and continues because terrorists want to kill all Americans. haven't had an attack on US soil since 9/11 and that is becuase of the current administration. The dems are the ones that have memory loss. Liberalism is a mental disorder. All communists and socialists should hidding behind the liberal name should go to Canada and stay there. Then you will find out that socialized medicine doesn't work and people die. That is a fact, not an opinion.
