Why did my people ever fight in the American Revolution? With this line of thinking we should have remained part of the Commonwealth of Nations and the British Crown.

Ms. Kennedy should be given a spot at the top because of her fine lineage. Puhlease.

They need to do away with appointments to this postion and opt for special elections.

"Could Christopher be the next US Senator from the State of Illinois???"

NUTS to that idea. Why is there this idea that the Senate isnt complete without a Kennedy in it?

Great piece, Mr. Chapman, the best in the paper today. In a generation of flakes and dope addicts, Caroline may be the best of her generation of Kennedys as far as being a serious, stable person...but that isnt saying much, and it doesnt qualify her for appointment.

I hope, when Teddy is finally gone, the Kennedy chapter of American political history will close forever. We can dream.

That weasel Sharpton supports Kennedy. That should be all you need to know.

As someone who grew up in upstate NY - my family tells me they are sick and tired of the 'listening tour' of the celebs from the city (or in Hillary's case - Washington D.C.) and the lip service to the enormous problems places like upstate NY are confronting, and that anyone who grew up on the upper east side or on a Greek Island will never understand.

As a resident of Chicago, you need only look to Stroger, Lipinski, Madigan, Hynes, Joyce, Osterman, and of course, Daley - to see that governments that are treated as a family business rather than the peoples business results in arrogant, unresponsive, dysfunctional, corrupt, and inept government. We deserve better - there are too many who have paid dearly to defend the right of the people to have leaders who govern with the consent of governed - and I hope that my fellow Upstate NYer's hand HRH Princess Caroline her head on a platter as the French did to Maria Antoinette, whom I am sure was a wonderful mother and advocate of the poor (let them eat cake).

Caroline Kennedy is aptly qualified to assume the seat to be vacated by Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Interestingly enough.........the short list of Democratic candidates to assume the vacant ILLINOIS US Senate seat are:
1) U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.
2) U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez
3) Illinois Atty. General Lisa Madigan
4) IL Senator Debbie Halvorson
5) IL Rep. John Fritchey
6)IL Sen. Emil Jones
7) IL Rep. Michael Madigan
8) CHRISTOPHER KENNEDY???
9) E-Bay candidate
10) No special election, please.
Yes, Christopher G. Kennedy, President of Merchandise Mart Properties, Inc. in Chicago, is a saavy businessman and the son of Robert & Ethel Kennedy. Could Christopher be the next US Senator from the State of Illinois???
Like Caroline, Christopher's not in the inner circle of Illinois politics and possesses both the leadership and business experience to succeed in Congress. That may not be such a bad thing. We need a new strong leader who can represent the Land of Lincoln honorably, not in the way we are currently being seen in the national media.
Were in the world did you get this list? Lisa Madigan, Tammy Duckworth, and Jan Schakowsky are all absent from the list - and I have NEVER heard of Fritchey or Havelerson on a list of possible senate candidates - but even more concerning, is that you blindly follow the logic that this seat, or the NY seat, belongs to a bunch of insiders - and that you and I get no say on who should represent us. You don't get much more inside the loop than being a member of the Kennedy family - so what in the world makes you think Chris Kennedy isn't inside the corrupted, incestuous politics of IL?

For anyone who wonders what is wrong with this country, they should listen to the insipid logic of your post - and watch the celebrity obsessed press expose just how hypocritical they are by comparing their coverage of Governor Palin to their coverage and commentary toward HRH Princess Caroline and her little pony, Macaroni.

Funny that you didn't take the same critical tone of Caroline Kennedy when she was equally unqualified to be one of Obama's VP candidate vetting committee, along with a couple Fannie Mae cronies. Have to give you some credit for taking the blinders off for a second, though, this time around.
Caroline's help on those projects was for candidate Obama's benefit and not up for public challenge. It was his decision to place her there to benefit him, not us. So if you are suggesting that a Senate is equally up to benefit Obama, then you might have a point. But if the Senate seat is being offered to benefit the citizens of New York, then she simply isn't qualified to serve in that capacity and we, the public, have a right to challenge her.

Maybe she is doing the gov a favor. Why else would he nit, in good conscience, choose a more qualified (experienced and seasoned ) interested party.
What is in it for the citizens of NY??

What hypocrites the libs are, these are the same people that rip Palin cuz she doesnt agree with drilling holes in babies heads. They claim that she is too inexperienced. She actually has more executive experience than the almighty Osama Obama and Joey "Opps, what did I say now?" Biden.
To appoint her is a travesty to this country.

I agree. Clearly, her selection to the vetting committee was payback for Ted's support of Obama. And, her vetting Biden was again, payback to Ted because Biden was about to retire from the Senate and what better way for Biden to go out but as VP. Biden and Kennedy are old, old liberal friends from the eastern liberal coast.

Caroline's appointment was Obama's payback to Ted, Hillary's appointment to State was payback to Ted as Ted needed Hillary out of the way in order to one, get her name out into the public and two, give her Hillary's seat. These people are so transparent and yet, the American people still continue to fall for it everytime.

And, we're supposed to be the example for the rest of the world?

I share your sentiment about Bush being mediocre at best. That being said, at least he was elected to his offices. Ms. Kennedy is doing nothing more than seeking a peerage title.

So, Sarah Palin was unqualified to be VP but Caroline Kennedy is qualified to be a U.S. senator?

What a transparent joke the Kennedy for Senator campaign is.

Let's see, Caroline Kennedy has no political experience or business experience, but she did give a speech at the recent DNC !!

Heck, she's qualified to be President.

Did he become Govenor on his own merits? Or was a name important?
I may feel somewhat uncomfortable with this, but it does happen in all parties.
Caroline, though, does not seek fame or power. I really think she would work hard for the good that government can do.
I must say that although I would feel uncomfortable, if it happens, I will probably smile comfortably.
What about Al Gore? Did he become a U.S. senator on his own merit or did his daddy's name (Senator Al Gore Senior) have anything to do with it?

She always seemed to be the introvert of the family - it was more her brother who was well-spoken and out front. Surprising that she wants to be a senator. And not an easy place to be a senator either - she'd best show her intellect.
