Actually what you described is what I was speaking of but thanks for the clarification :)
This is BAD. The malware encrypts your personal files, but not your operating system, and unless you pay a $ 300 ransom within 3 days, the encryption key on their server is destroyed, thus locking your files forever.
What EVERYBODY SHOULD DO if they venture out on line (SCARY !) is use a DEDICATED pc for going online, and don't keep ANY important files on it EVER. On the pc you use to store your important files, regularly back it up, and NEVER use that pc to go online. Although that still won't keep that pc 100% safe, that's about the bets you can do (short of encasing it in concrete and burying it under the sea 20,000 feet down in a place that only you know (DON'T TELL ANYBODY WHERE YOU HID IT !))
