Jere Melo was not investigating a report of an illegal drug grow when he was killed. He was investigating complaints of a particular individual, Aaron Bassler, camping on company land and threatening a neighbor with a gun. Melo was accompanied by the complaining neighbor's daughter's boyfriend, who was carrying a pistol, and who knew Bassler from school days.

The whole story of massive drug grows taking over national forests and private timberlands is a myth, a very overhyped myth. Incidents of gun violence at trespass marijuana grows are rare and all or nearly all involved cops or robbers.

The "Take Back Our Forests" motto is a front for the timber industry and law enforcement. There is no real danger of hikers and recreationists in the national forest being shot at by growers, because there are so few of those grows that the chance of coming upon one is vanishingly thin.

More ignorant propaganda in order to justify wasting even more money that we don't have on the failed war on drugs. Give it up and pursue a real job that actually produces a value to humanity over spreading fear and ignorance.

Jim, I work with the Northern California Wildlands Reclamation Coalition, I am in these trespass grows on a daily basis, and yes there is a real danger to being there.
There are chemicals that are banned in the US, weapons, booby traps, poisons, and other nasties like human waste.
Even if there were no immediate danger, the environmental impact is nothing but alarming.
I recently was in a garden with a 10,000 gallon dam built in a stream that was laced with carbofuran, a nerve agent.
I would gladly take you into one of these grows to show that, yes, there is a real danger
