Let there be no cheers for Rob Portman.

The Ohio senator is, pardon the tautology, a conservative Republican and last week, he did something conservative Republicans do not do.

Supporting equal marriage rights for gay and lesbian Americans IS, and SHOULD BE, a "conservative value".

It is the Democrats and liberals, and their assorted wingnut cohorts and minions that want to micromanage Americans' lives (NO big sodas in New York according to liberal minion Bloomberg !)(the courts have recently sensibly put a stop to that nonsense, at least temporarily, as Emperor Bloomberg is appealing the court's decision).

Conservatives often claim that they adhere to the U.S. constitution more than the dems and libs, yet one of the most important guarantees our U.S. constitution provides is Freedom Of Religion. And now many religious denominations, and other religious groups disagree on the issue of marriage equality. So favoring one religious group's view of marriage, is a direct violation of teh First Amendment's guarantee of freedom of religion.

We should desire the most diverse and vibrant society, if we are to celebrate the U.S. Constitution's GUARANTEE of LIBERTY, a word too seldom heard nowadays.

Equal marriage rights for ALL Americans, gay and lesbian Americans included, is fundamantally a conservative value.

I have been wondering ever since this news first appeared; if it were possible for Senator Portman to have made it possible for his son and his partner to marry, but leave the rest of us to just flounder, would he have made that choice? Or would he have said, "If everyone cannot marry, my son cannot". Now there is real character. As it is he made the only choice he could make if he wanted to stay in the life of his son. I give him kudos only for being a good father, not for a politician that was pushed into a corner.

No word on whether Portman favors repeal of DOMA or enactment of ENDA.

I suspect his "favoring" of marriage equality does not extend to getting federal marriage benefits for same sex couples. In fact, he advocates voting on the issue state by state, a route which would block federal benefits.

Should read "pardon the REDUNDANCY".

"Conservative Republican" is not a tautological statement.

The writer needs a refresher course in a few things.
