Technically, "pleaded", or "pled" are both correct and interchangeable. "Pled" is probably more common usage amongst former and pending felons.

Why bother with the death penalty? They will never execute him anyway. Look at the case of Mumia Abul Jamal, 30 years on death row for killing a police officer and he is a celebrity and just had his sentence commuted to life. Whooppee. The tax payers get to support him forever and he has access to better medical care then the police officers do.
