Obama Returns to End-of-Life Plan That Caused Stir

By ROBERT PEAR
December 25, 2010

WASHINGTON — When a proposal to encourage end-of-life planning touched off a political storm over “death panels,” Democrats dropped it from legislation to overhaul the health care system. But the Obama administration will achieve the same goal by regulation, starting Jan. 1.

Under the new policy, outlined in a Medicare regulation, the government will pay doctors who advise patients on options for end-of-life care, which may include advance directives to forgo aggressive life-sustaining treatment.

Congressional supporters of the new policy, though pleased, have kept quiet. They fear provoking another furor like the one in 2009 when Republicans seized on the idea of end-of-life counseling to argue that the Democrats’ bill would allow the government to cut off care for the critically ill.

Under the rule, doctors can provide information to patients on how to prepare an “advance directive,” stating how aggressively they wish to be treated if they are so sick that they cannot make health care decisions for themselves.

While the new law does not mention advance care planning, the Obama administration has been able to achieve its policy goal through the regulation-writing process, a strategy that could become more prevalent in the next two years as the president deals with a strengthened Republican opposition in Congress.

The proposal for Medicare coverage of advance care planning was omitted from the final health care bill because of the uproar over unsubstantiated claims that it would encourage euthanasia.

Sarah Palin, the 2008 Republican vice-presidential candidate, and Representative John A. Boehner of Ohio, the House Republican leader, led the criticism in the summer of 2009. Ms. Palin said “Obama’s death panel” would decide who was worthy of health care.

Mr. Boehner, who is in line to become speaker, said,“This provision may start us down a treacherous path toward government-encouraged euthanasia.”

Forced onto the defensive, Mr. Obama said that nothing in the bill would “pull the plug on grandma.” So he put it in his New regulations instead.

The only church that silly sack of it ever belonged to was the Church of the Open Bottle. As I say, the voters in America don't care what gets dredged out of an estuary by wealthy jew banksters like Goldman-SUCKS and dumped on the plush carpeting of high office and then palmed off on the drooling public as their "leader"...or should I say BLEEDER?

Obama couldn't lead a two car funeral procession.

President Obama received Communion at this service. People who are Pro-Choice should not be given Communion. I strongly believe that Jesus does not want to be united to people who murder developing human beings.
Jesus wants to love all people, but abortion denies Him that opportunity.

LOL!!! You teabaggers are something else!

It's gripe! Gripe! Gripe! The president never goes to church! Then on vacation, he sacrifices a primo tee time to worship at the chapel on the Marine base. You'd think the godly horde would applaud.

No way! It's a show, they say. Nobody even gives him points for being like the Prodigal Son.

I'm sure God was pleased the First Family worshiped in church this morning. May He have mercy on the souls of the hard hearted, Pharisee teabaggers!

Christians believe that God gives everybody free will. Everyone is free to make good choices or bad choices in life. Pro-Choice people believe that the freedom to make a bad choice is more important than being restricted from making a bad choice. At the end of the day, it is still a bad choice.
Jesus will have a talk with them about their choices when they see Him in the after-life.

So now the crazies are criticizing Obama for going to Church and visiting the troops? Yesterday it was that he didn't mingle with 'the people' enough.

I guess they still haven't come up with any substantive critique of actual policy.

It seems only the left has any real-world criticism of Obama. The lunatic-right just has nonsense.

It's noteworthy how you guys are just a mirror reflection of the hate the lefties had for Bush. Nothing of substance to show you have an understanding of specific policies or implementation; just mindless hate like a third grader.

The man has been President for over 2 years, and never goes to Church. All of a sudden he goes to Church, did he just now get religion? Or does he hate being criticized for not going to Church? His wife is so concerned about what their children eat, but not concerned about their spiritual life. He pretends this is not a Christian Nation when he must know it is. I would love to believe the President is a Christian man, but I do not believe he is, and it is his business.

the number of slack-jawed lemmings, like platter, that gush over everything and anything "obama", has dwindled to the point it's really only him, the moron marine and the world renown apologist, responsibility.
they are now merely comic relief.
