Farrell rejected those calls, saying "We cannot allow political pressure from critics of unpopular ideas to inhibit the free exchange of ideas."

Funny how when its a Socialist Liberals views they can not be censored but if it is a Conservative Christians views or beliefs they must remain silent. ID ring a bell.

If "Conservative Christians views or beliefs" were taught, I'd be awfully unhappy.

Any right wing right left right center right up right down,
any extremist group or individual doesn't thrill me at all.

In college environments, one or the other prevails, usually, and to say it's always the "left," isn't true.

He's not my favorite person; he says his teachings are no different from those of, example, examining "who killed JKF?".
I disagree.

His stuff is more in the line of "current events" while who shot JFK is history.

And who's kidding whom? I saw him on tv tonight, and it's as though I know him, although I don't. He reminds me so much of my philosophy instructor who preached his own idea of religion, and did so, until he was fired.
I loved the guy: I was 18 and open to anything, and he was the most enjoyable professor I had--he taught at 12 noon, and even those enrolled in his lectures couldn't get a seat we had to sit on the steps of the lecture hall, to hear him. He'd attained celebrity status on campus and beyond, and I can't say I didn't enjoy him.
As for this guy, I probably wouldn't enjoy him. It's not the same thing, the "topic" isn't the same, it's in the right-now, rather than the tradional philosophy of religion (Islam) that my most interesting professor taught.

Thing is: It's one of those things, a subject that is hugely "wrong" from our point of view, right now. But if our kids qualify for the University of Wisconsin, Madison, then I think they qualify to take a class by this guy, and discuss it, think about it, learn to know slant, bias, and how it works both ways.
I think the kids who take his class are smart enough to listen and smart enough to discern b.s. from the real thing.

I don't agree with this guy at all, but my neice is signed up for his class, and so we'll see.
Or, I think *she'll* see.

Or I'll be wrong.

We can't coddle our older children.
We need to have them experience as much as they can.
But we need to have discussions with them, at home, on the phone, in person--to see how their evolving minds are perceiving what they're hearing.

Or, we can just lock them in closets and never let them hear what we don't want them to hear.

"I hold you tight with an open hand" -- me to my kids. And so far, so good.
Now, they have to do the same for my grandkids.

Scary world, isn't it?
But we musn't hold them hostage within our own beliefs. That leads to rebellion.
We need to listen to them, as, hopefully, they've listened to us.

And then we let them take classes like this one, that we might not like, but come Thanksgiving, there will be a whole lot of discussion, I expect. Which is good.

Gotta let them go,

We had a cell in Oshkosh and I worked for them, but didn't know it at the time. After 9/11, I said something to the FBI about them.

The cell owned Ramada Inn on Koeler Ave. They housed fellow Al-Qaida members while they were attending aircraft instructions at the Great Lakes Tech class over at the airport.
After the spring session in 1999, the school closed down. Right after that the Pakistan manager told me that he wasn't to be disturbed because he was getting phone calls from overseas.
This happened several times.

Then all of a sudden, the Limited Liability company that they had formed sold the place right before EAA to a bunch of people with India decent. These people were embezzlers and ran the place into the ground.

The Pakistani manager went back to Maryland. The Pakistani District manager went to Alanta where the CDC has it's center. They also had an operation in Milwaukee which was sold.

These people did not like Americans. I spoke with them about their religion and they said to me that "they followed a modern day profit."

I to this day believe them to be Al-Qaida and let me tell you, they were not associated with our country in any way.

there is enough evidence..that any grand jury would charge goverment officals..and bring them to trial..MOTIVE OPPERTUNITY AND PROFFIT...off of a crime..is pretty strong..and that is enough to at least have a independant group get to the bottom of this crime...history will show a diffrent story in 40 years..than the current people think happened..just study it with a open mind...the facts are right before your eyes

None of this prof's ideas should surprise anyone since UW Madison recently ranked #3 on the list of top party colleges in the U.S. Parents who send their sons and daughters there should already know what kind of education they're getting.

This comment is directed towards you, obviously u have not done any research into what this man or any other behind the movement has said. i am no liberal or republican or democrat, i am a patriot to this country. i have no idea of the differences between these groups because i dont really care, i do care about facts and truths and the official story is short on both. dont believe the people who speak of these things do the research yourself. if you come back and say you have i will call you a lier because anyone who has done the slightest bit of research will discover the official story is full of holes.

Man, where do they GET these clowns? I have, and had 2 relatives in college and they are sick to death of these so called " professors" ( clowns) who come in and expect you to tow their little political lines in class or you don't pass.

And don't think it doesn't affect the ones who don't think deeper either. It's annoying to see them come home and spout this trash that YOU paid for. And some of them are SO programmed, and pitifully liberal sounding that you can't even reason with them. They get all defensive when you challenge them to think for themselves; they hold their " degree" in such high esteem.

Amen to that, Sultan. So much for this "free exchange of ideas" crap. If you can't talk about it in college; how can you handle the thing when it's in your face in real life?

I think it's sad we live in a country that is allowes to make fun of our government on sat. night live and others. We must look like fools to the other countrys that blow thier kids up.What I want to know is ..what do we get out of this info..who will get more money .If we would teach all the children starting in 1st grade about all the wars and there lies and massive loss of lives..All wars.We can't financially profit from past wars like when the relatives of the japanese people that were taken into holding after the pearl harbor mess..they recieved money for that,,a past war.Teach all Immagrants the reason some wars kept us free. and MAYBE..the next generation will learn to be more involved in voting..maybe we need the 60's back..I'm there with my signs!!!

Hi Dinah,
I know you're dead serious, and frankly I think you're dead right about the trash kids get in college and come home and spew out at the Thanksgiving table because now, they know it all.
But I had to chuckle (I don't chuckle, I don't think, I just laugh a little and smile) and I had to do this when I read what you wrote because it was ME all the way.
Oh, know it all, I was, with 2 1/2 months of college at the University of Illinois under my levis (it was the late sixties).
When Ted Kennedy was "involved" in that "mishap" with Mary Jo Kopecne, the involvement that ended her life off a bridge in Mass. being chauffered by a tippled Teddy--my folks said he left her in that water to die, and I got all huffy and then really huffy and we had one loud "argument"--me, the college freshman know it all, told them (mom and daddy conservatives) that they didn't know up from down because they just hated the Kennedy family.
Luckily, nobody's blood pressure reached the point of no return during that "disagreement" but clearly, one of us was wrong and of course it wasn't going to be educated lil ole me.

Well, not too many years later, I had a change of opinion, which, Dinah, is the good news.
Most intelligent kids can take in the b.s., spout it all over, and as they mature and see the world as the huge and complicated place it is, they see that their hot and rabid conclusions about the hot situations that occur during their college years--they begin to see that there's two sides to most situations, and a great big grey side, too.
And they see that it's better to get all the information before you go spouting off the oftentimes too opened minded ideas of professors who teach because colleges are the only places that will accept them.

In the end, it's much ado about nothing--just a kid wanting to impress, show his or her educational bravado--and as fast as it shows up in the kids, it dissipates.

It did for me, my friends, husband, daughter, son-in-law and all the rest...so I consider this professor rather like a gnat--annoying but not harmful.

Best,
Lee

Sherry,
Why do you think it's sad that we are "allowed" to joke about our country on Saturday Night Live and the other shows?
Wouldn't it be far worse if we weren't allowed to do so?
Think about it: you wouldn't have been allowed to write what you did, nor would I be allowed to reply.
We, in this country, have something called the free exchange of ideas--and aren't you grateful that we do?

tecmav,
you've got the qualifications for being the ENTIRE Bush Cabinet...you could do it, and he'd be darned happy to have you there.
A stronger Bush advocate I don't think I've ever "met"--more power to you and you dedication and convictions.
I might not agree with everything you say...but I do admire your certainty in your political ideologies.
