In the battle of the Thompsons the one who was not even physically in the ring won. Time will tell whether Fred Thompson's strong showing in these and other polls comes only from dissatisfaction with the other main Republican candidates, all of whom have been struggling to defend their past and present views, or from a deep support for Fred Thompson's own policies, which have not been spelled out in detail yet, as well as his personality.
