Actually, this idea was first floated in 1979, the year I won an Emmy at WXIA-TV in Atlanta for a 5 part series, "Georgia's Golden Legacy: The barrier islands," which included Cumberland. At the time, some were pushing adding 'jitneys' so that elderly and disabled people could more easily access the island. The island's park rangers didn't use vehicles. They patrolled on horseback. The Park Service argument against motorized vehicles was that jitneys could upset Cumberland's fragile ecosystem.
