ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- North Pole elves have good reason to celebrate again, thanks to a decision by the U.S. Postal Service to resume a Santa Claus letter program that's thrilled children from around the world for decades.

WASHINGTON The Postal Service reported a loss of $3.8 billion last year, despite a reduction of 40,000 full-time positions and other cost-cutting measures.

The loss was $1 billion more than the year before despite job cuts and other efforts designed to save billions of dollars, postal officials said Monday.

"Our 2009 fiscal year proved to be one of the most challenging in the history of the Postal Service," Chief Financial Officer Joseph Corbett said.

...and they think they can run "healthcare"? What a freakin' joke. The Fed can't run ANYTHING. Write and ask Santa to give ALL of them pink slips.

Its ridiculous. USPS should not be involved with dumb religious rituals... let alone lying to little kids. Any parent that spends money on kids gifts and they say it was 'given' by a fictional character, is a liar and an unfit parent.

Totally agree, they lie to their children about santa, easter bunny etc. When the child finds out they were lied too it creates mistrust between parent and child, the child thinks if they lied to me about this what else are they lying about?

I guess since they started up the program again they will demand another $3 raise on their union contract next year to pay them for their "extra" effort. Then the USPS will require another increase in the price of stamps to pay for it. And because they are doing all this extra work they will obviously require new post offices around the country. I mean, theirs are probably about two years old on the average and they just can't operate in sub-standard buildings. So I believe we are going to end up paying for this, and paying, and paying and paying

First of all the Fed does not run the USPS anymore. I don't think that many people are aware of this fact. The Fed only sets guidelines under which the Post Office is supposed to be run. But the reason that the post office is having problems is that since the Fed no longer runs it. The state and local governments have been setting guidelines as well, and some of these rules are what is costing the US post Office money. And as for fictional characters receiving mail through the USPS. Why not! They deliver to fictional addresses now. And besides don't blame the Post Office that you don't know who Santa Clause is. Thousands of children would not receive a gift on December 25 IF THERE WERE NO SANTA CLAUSE. Just because you didn't receive a gift doesn't mean that He doesn't exist. I feel that I exist and you have never seen me either. Besides Santa Claus is more of a spiritual being and not really someone you can get a visual fix on. And I think if someone wants to read all those letters at a certain location and use the ID OF Santa Claus then the US Post Office is obligated to deliver the mail to the addressee. And since they only have to deliver to one address, it should be a money making thing and not a loser. How would you feel if they told you that they could not deliver the mail addressed to you because you didn't exist. Well that is happening to some of us right now in this country. And all because of the state interfering in your business in the supposedly the name of Safety. So if you want to help the post office pick on someone else that you think that doesn't exist. Next thing you guys are going to say is that God doesn't exist. And yet he owns more houses in this country than the government. And the USPS delivers to his houses to. My personal opinion is that they should deliver the mail to any address that is given to them. That is what they are supposed to be doing, but the state and local government are telling them not to deliver to any address that is not on their approved list. And that is why you may be seeing letters returned to you marked undeliverable as addressed. And this is costing big bucks to everyone, and they are doing this in your name. Stupid is as stupid Does Right! The real culprits behind all the problems in this economy is your employees on the local level, but since the Fed refuses to stop them, it's ok to grip at them, but stop just blaming the Fed. There are more people at this dance than you think.

The person that writes back as Santa Claus is an existing employee. They do not get paid extra money. It is simply a goodwill thing that we do. Usually takes a couple mins at the most. Personally , I hate the whole scame of lying to kids about who gave them gifts. I think its disgusting but for another thread lmao.

Wait until you have children to tell others how to raise them. The entire Christmas experience can be utilized as a reward for good behavior by a kindly grandpa like character. As for it being a "scame". your a putze.

OOps I had a typo. It happens sometimes. I still stand behind that lying to children is wrong. If it makes you feel better about yourself to name call me because we disagree, that is on you. I do not see the need to put others down simply because they have a different opinion than me. Have a great day anyway.

What's interesting about your posts is you seem to have a passive/aggressive disorder. It either directly benefits you, or you're against it. If you're against it, then your reasons are ALL that's important. You seem to have no empathy for others positions and defend your to a ridiculous extreme. Are you now or have you ever raised children ? Without applicable experience, I'd have to believe your opinion is ONLY based on what you personally know about the subject. Everyone has those experiences, but parents have those and more. Teaching a child to count on their fingers may seem counterproductive in hindsight, but at the time it's very beneficial. Describing the Santa experience, as lying to children, is a valid as relabeling all fiction/story books as lying tomes. Everyone is different because of nature and nurture. The nurture is up to the parents and unless they're harmful, I think we should treat subjects like this as religious freedoms. Let the parents decide. "judge not, lest ye be judged"

Everybody out here is being lied to in one fashion or another. But to say someone doesn't exist just because you have not seen them in your life is a scientific approach to a situation. Well unlike the rest of the commentors on this topic I believe that it doesn't matter if someone is real. A fictional character affects your life as much as a flesh and blood character does because all it takes is for one person to believe in the fictional character and he will affect your life the same as anyone else. And I can say this with confidence because the use of alias's has been going on for years. Another character that you probably don't believe in is the boogey man and yet every year the candy companies and costumers make millions off of him. As to whether he exist or not he gets blamed for all sorts of bad things that happen to us. Is he real or is the belief in him that makes him real. The true question is the post office making money by delivering mail to him. Thousands of stamps sold should mean a profit, and since the letters are going to one location transportation cost to deliver these letters should be more profitable than delivering to any other address. Why do you think that they give discounts to volume buyers at stores. No the post office should be making money on delivering letters to Santa Claus.

There is a difference between lying about santa and fictional tales. The difference is that people are sometimes spending upwards of thousands of dollars and than crediting the gift giving to a fictional character. I believe lying about the tooth fairy is wrong as well . Once parents cross that line of compensating children for their lies, there is a trust level that is gone for good. You may feel differently and that is your right.
