"Yet, there are those who seem to think that the American taxpayers will forever just keep shoveling our money into the furnace of bailing out banks, car companies, and union pensions funds. Moreover, these same putrid people (be they bureaucrats, bankers, or union bosses) seem to think that, if they hide the truth from the the American taxpayer, we will just blindly and willingly keep bailing out failure."

This is an excellent article for any taxpayer that wants to have a better grasp on Tamaqua's money woes. If you ask a politician or the borough manager, they'll quickly tell you that we have no money problems because budget is balanced (at the taxpayer's expense) If we ran our households like they run the borough, we'd lose our homes, unless we could petition our employers for a raise every time we overspent.

(IMPORTANT: Whenever I make a comment, 100% of the time I am SIGNED IN and "GREEN" is behind my tag. When there is "No-Green," obviously it's an impersonator who should be reported to Topix using the "Report Abuse" key right above said comment. Thank you so much)

There would be no pension problems if the damn politican's wouldn't have robbed pension funds for money when instead they should have either limited there spending or rasied taxes, but no in order to save face they stole (borrowed) money from the pension funds and was unable to return the money. And then they decided to invest the pension money in the stock market and really got greedy when the market went throught the roof, but when it was in the tank and currently still tring to recover who do we blame the working man that has the pension. Who is to blame I ask you??????????

I find it that most people that bitch about pensions are those of them that never had a job that offered you a pension. Sorry but a sole 401K with a small company match is for suckers. It people that work for these outfits that make these company owners and there entire family super rich.

The plan is to pit the have nots against the haves.
I have a definded pension plan and a self contributory 401K where I work.I've had it for 35 years and it's worth quite a bit of money.
I work for a private company and have always considered it a part of my salary. But I don't think it's fair to say 401K's are for suckers, the American people have been convinced that these scams can make them alot of money(Never told them they could lose 40-50% of their money, like in 2007-08)and now only 20% of employee's of private companies have them.
I only wish I had stock options like the executives got, so I could be sipping a cocktail on a beach right now.

What I said is sole 401K plans with min. company match. Key word is sole. The 401K was developed to bridge the gap between your Pension and Social Security back in the day. Not as a sole retirement income, that is why so many peple are in tough times after retirment. That is all I meant by that.

Pensions can work, but changes need to be made.

1.) Get rid of all the political cronies. Only people who work 25 years or more deserve a pension...all the political appointees, who only serve 4 or 8 years don't deserve one and there should be no early retirements.

2.) States need to fund their obligations. Almost ALL states are in deep trouble because they do NOT properly fund the pension system EVERY SINGLE YEAR. This is the MAIN problem.

3.) The taxpayers need to acknowledge that public servants pay is LOWER compared to the private sector.(When you compare qualifications to qualifications, they ARE paid lower...you need to compare education to education etc.) They accept lower pay (and all the BS from the public) because they negotiate for health insurance and pension.

4.) Public servants do NOT get bonuses, 401K matching, stock options, overtime, tuition reimbursement, health club memberships, etc.

What we need to do is stop attacking the poor and middle class and go after the super rich.

The top 1% of Americans earn 24% of the GDP...this is almost twice as much as back in 1980. the Rich are way richer and they have used fancy 503 groups like "Reform NOw" to get the public to hate the public servants and reduce their benefits...which saves the rich money.

Many private sector job salaries are rated and compared to public employee salaries...by destroying public unions/workers and their benefits...the total compensation will decrease...so then private sector companies will be able to decrease the salaries/benefits that they offer their employees.

The rich are extremely brilliant...they have the middle class destroying each other while they sit back and grow even more powerful and richer.

The leftists in government misappropriated union funds? So the answer is more leftist policies AND LEFTIST TAXES? No, and NO!

It's time to break the unions and finish getting rid of the liberals in government - in 2012!

The unions are destroying - Bankrupting - The American people. It's time to get rid of the unions!

If you want to be competitive, and make a fair wage for your skills - THEN GET AN EDUCATION AND WORK HARD. START YOUR OWN Business...

No more entitlements for lazy, good for nothings - You are not going to succeed in dragging the rest of the country down. The people are now aware - thanks to the Tea Party - The liberal government and the liberal union bosses are paying themselves more than the private sector with better benefits! And they're doing it with Private Sector Taxes!!

NO MORE! The trouble for liberals and liberal unions has only just begun!

Run your mouth all you want but your forgetting one thing if it wasn't for the unions you would be working for $7.00 per hour in unsafe conditions while all the business owner got rich. What is it you suggested get an education and start my own company????(HUMMMM) Sounds like these words are coming from a shitty bussiness owner that can't success so he will try to take it out the workforce, if we all owned a bussiness whom would actually build this country, and the great products it produces? Your a waste of a conversation! By the way got a great great union job with the education I currently have.

You have a way of cutting through the cra*p here FR. It's refreshing to see more Americans waking up here... The socialist liberals keep blaming big corporations (which account for less than 1% of all economic activity in America) for shipping jobs overseas, when we all know the corporations are FORCED to do this because of anti-business liberal government GREED for their tax dollars.

It is Liberal GREED that has damaged America to beyond repair. The unions are nothing but an extension of liberal greed! The time has come to put it right.

Check out what's going on in Wisconsin!!! Don't believe the hype.
Unions began in the PRIVATE SECTOR, inside business sweatshops, NOT THE GOVERNMENT! They used to fight for "private sector" (company) workers' rights and better working conditions. But today...the union has moved out of the private sector (businesses) into the "public" sector (government), and here lies the problem.

Wow, you have to check your calendar. It's not 1919. All this whining about unsafe work issues and slave labor is no longer relevant thanks to OSHA. Unions still do serve a purpose, of course, but not to the degree they once did. Times are changing, and the union mentality has to change with it. Maybe not so much in the private sector, but most definitely in the public sector.

For Mike - I find a few problems with your post
#4 - sorry, but public sector union members DO get tuition reimbursements. Just ask any school teacher. As for the matching 401K, we the taxpayers are paying the "employer's" share as well as the "employees" share of their pension. That's a whole lot better than a 401K where they would pay half while the employer pays half (or even a smaller employer contribution)

#3 - public servants pay is LOWER compared to the private sector. I find that hard to believe when I see the salaries some of these people are getting for a lot less than a 40 hour work week.

I do agree we need to get rid of the political cronies, but then there wouldn't be any public servants.

Really you ever walk into a Walmart that is as close to a slave shop as it gets. Low wages, bad benefits, ect. But your right let all go to work for $7.00 an hour while gas and heating oil is approaching $ 4.00 per gallon. Private and Public unions must stay inplace to prevent unfair labor practice and fair pay.

There is nothing more sad than seeing someone whom worked harm all their life and retire only to have to return to the workforce bagging groceries or greeting people to make end meet. Why does this happen? No Pension!

The union got its start in the PRIVATE sector, not the government sector! Yet in the last 20 years they've almost abandoned the private sector because it's almost impossible to get in.
The union... needs go to go back to the private sector because that's where sweatshops are starting to crop up again.
Tamaqua workers recently unionized.... NOT because their working conditions were bad; and NOT because Tamaqua taxpayers are greedy! They unionized because it was way too easy to do. In fact I'd bet they got absolutely NO resistance from anyone at Borough Hall, and might even have received ....QUIET encouragement from management and elected officials alike.
Consequence: Tamaqua taxpayers will, forevermore, be obligated to provide these troublesome, traitorous employees (many of whom are our neighbors)(some who should have been fired a decade ago) with vastly superior wages, benefits, frills and pensions than most of us will ever see in the private sector.
