Dems: Don't 'play chicken' with debt ceiling

Jan 2, 2011 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: Deseret News

Some Republican lawmakers said Sunday opposed raising the ceiling on the nation's debt without tackling government spending, and President Barack Obama's top economic adviser warned against "playing chicken" on the issue.

No doubt the Rethuglicans will try and extort some additional handouts to corporate fascists or wealthy individuals to enact some sort of "compromise" LOL!!!

However, if the Dems are smart, they will have an up or down vote on this annual event, and force the Fleabaggers to label themselves either the party of NO or the party of additional deficits.

Watching the thugs slug it out will be great political theatre- watching Bland Paul vote for raising the debt ceiling- an incidental pleasure!

(R) Issa on Holder: Change or quit

By Sara Jerome
01/02/11

Attorney General Eric Holder should either change his approach to major issues or leave the administration, according to Rep. Darrell Issa.

If Holder was unable to confront Wikileaks on the basis of terrorism, he should have found another solution—for instance, confronting those involved as criminals, Issa (R-Calif.) said on "Fox News Sunday."

"Otherwise the world is laughing at this paper tiger we've become," said Issa, who will chair the House Oversight Committee in the next Congress.

Holder's failure in this regard means he is hurting the administration, according to Issa.

"If you're hurting the administration, either stop hurting the administration, or leave," he said.

Issa called for a "mature, bipartisan" bill addressing Wikileaks in the next Congress.

"And we're going to do that right off the bat because the kind of transparency we need is not to have somebody outing what is said by diplomats in private," he said.

Every Senate Democrat voted to raise debt limit to $14.3 trillion

By Michelle Malkin
January 28, 2010

Every Senate Democrat voted to raise the debt limit to $14.3 trillion. The vote was 60-40 on straight partisan lines.

Let me repeat that — and let it be repeated loudly and often:

Every Senate Democrat voted to raise the debt limit to $14.3 trillion.

That’s $45,000 per American.

Senate Approves Amendment to Raise Debt Ceiling by $1.9 Trillion

Jan 29, 2010
By COREY BOLES

WASHINGTON—The Senate approved legislation Thursday increasing the federal government's borrowing limit by $1.9 trillion, enough to enable the Treasury to pay its bills through 2010.

The 60-39 vote was strictly along party lines with no Republicans joining the Democratic majority to approve the legislation.

Once the increase is signed into law, the federal government will be able to borrow up to $14.3 trillion, by far the highest amount of debt it has ever held on its books. The current limit of around $12.4 trillion would have been breached by the end of February.

House lawmakers must still take up the legislation and are expected to do so next week, according to a senior House Democratic aide.

The increase comes just over a month after Congress upped the borrowing cap by $290 billion from its previous limit of $12.1 trillion.

A vote to increase the debt ceiling is politically difficult but is largely symbolic. There is little chance Congress would allow the government to breach its debt limit. If there were to occur, the ramifications for the financial markets and the U.S. fiscal position could be disastrous.

Financial markets globally were roiled in November, when the government of Dubai, a much smaller entity than the U.S., warned it was unable to continue servicing its debt.

Under that scenario, the U.S. government would likely lose its prized top-shelf credit rating, be forced to pay substantially higher interest rates to its creditors and the value of the U.S. dollar could plunge.

Obama's National Debt Dwarfs Bush's and Reagan's

By Peter Roff
Posted: June 8, 2010

It is a measure of the nation’s economic illiteracy that the most recent debt projections have not received more coverage. Sure, most people can tell Karl Marx from Harpo but it is highly unlikely that they can distinguish between Adam Smith and Will, even if he were to bite them on a visible hand.

As reported Friday by Bloomberg, the total United States debt under President Barack Obama is poised to explode past its statistical post-war norms to a point where it “exceeds the value of the nation’s annual economic output.” Total federal government debt rose past $13 trillion for the first time in June 2010 and is on track to surpass U.S. Gross Domestic Product by the year 2012, according to projections just issued by the International Monetary Fund.

Part of the problem is that the U.S. economy is not growing. The stimulus spending that President Obama and the Democrats who control Congress said would solve the problem and bring about an early end to the recession has not worked as advertized, leaving unemployment figures at their highest point in decades and doing little to spark productive economic activity.

Right now, according to a variety of estimates, the U.S. economy, if it grows, will do so at something less than its statistical average in the latter half of the 20th century, which puts it at below 3.2 percent.

There are those who will undoubtedly point to the large deficits run up on a yearly basis under Presidents Ronald Reagan
and George W. Bush as proof that what is happening under Obama is just business as usual. And they would be wrong.

Under Reagan and under Bush the U.S. economy grew, and strongly, making the annual new debt to GDP ratio something that could be absorbed as increased revenues filled federal coffers. Under Obama, the new spending along with the projected tax increases that will occur when he allows the Bush tax cuts to expire will lead to a decline in future federal revenues, making the new total debt--nearly half of which has been amassed under the current president alone--something that may handicap the U.S. economy for at least a generation.

Bush’s economic policies are not working????

Obama believes that there is no such thing as a “jobless recovery.” When millions of Americans aren’t working, neither are the Bush Administration’s economic policies.

As US Senator, Obama will champion policies that get our economy moving and people working instead of short-sighted tax-cuts for the rich that have failed to spark a recovery.

Can’t do anything at home with $12 billion a month on Iraq (So Obama Expands his own War in Afghanistan)!!!!

The fact that we’re spending $12 billion every month in Iraq means that we can’t engage in the kind of infrastructure improvements that are going to make us more competitive, we can’t deliver on the kinds of health care reforms that Clinton and I are looking for.

McCain is willing to have these troops over there for 100 years. The notion that we would sustain that kind of effort and neglect not only making us more secure here at home, more competitive here at home, allow our economy to sink.

Obama the Liar: Restore Pay-As-You-Go law

The Democrat Senate should restore the pay-as-you-go law that was a big reason for why we had record surpluses in the 1990s.

Now, I know that some in my own party will argue that we can't address the deficit or freeze government spending when so many are still hurting. And I agree--which is why [the proposed 3-year spending] freeze won't take effect until next year--when the economy is stronger. That's how budgeting works.

But understand, if we don't take meaningful steps to rein in our debt, it could damage our markets, increase the cost of borrowing, and jeopardize our recovery--all of which would have an even worse effect on our job growth and family incomes.

Rather than fight the same tired battles that have dominated Washington for decades, it's time to try something new. Let's invest in our people without leaving them a mountain of debt. Let's meet our responsibility to the citizens who sent us here. Let's try common sense. A novel concept.

FactCheck: Obama's estimate of $8T deficit is closer to $3T

Republicans laughed when Obama described the huge deficits he had inherited when he took office. Despite the Republican scoffing, Obama's claims are backed up by the historical record--mostly.[Looking at each fact that Obama cited]:

Obama:[By 2009] "a one-year deficit of over $1 trillion."

FactCheck: Deficit when Obama took office: CBO projected the deficit would total $1.2 trillion. Actual was closer to $1.4 Trillion.

Obama:[By 2009, we had] "projected deficits of $8 trillion over the next decade."

FactCheck: CBO projected only a $3.1 trillion deficit over 10 years.

So the president may have strained the facts when he spoke of what was being predicted for future years. His figure is based on a "baseline" projection by Obama's own OMB projecting a 10-year deficit of $8.9 trillion.

Idiot Obama: Spending freeze is like a hatchet where you need a scalpel

Q: In the middle of a huge financial crisis that is yet to be resolved, how this is going to affect you not in small ways, but in major ways, and the approach you would take to the presidency.

McCAIN: How about a spending freeze on everything but Defense, Veterans Affairs and entitlement programs? We ought to seriously consider, with the exceptions of caring for our veterans, national defense and several other vital issues.

OBAMA: The problem with a spending freeze is you’re using a hatchet where you need a scalpel. There are some programs that are very important that are currently underfunded. I want to increase early childhood education. We’re currently spending $10 billion a month in Iraq when they have a $79 billion surplus. It seems to me that if we’re going to be strong at home as well as strong abroad, that we’ve got to look at bringing that war to a close.

Obama for Bad Loans: Get minorities into home ownership & global marketplace (Who cares if they're qualified. That's not my problem.).

Obama adopted the CBC principles:

* The CBC is focused on economic empowerment issues including:

New Markets and Small and Minority Business Development. The CBC will seek to increase opportunities for minority and small and disadvantaged businesses by expanding contracting opportunities in the public and private sectors, increasing access to capital, creating tax incentives for capital improvements, removing outdated and restrictive regulatory barriers, and streamlining and enhancing procurement tools to encourage minority and small business utilization.

* Trade and Global Economic Empowerment.

The CBC will work to ensure that the benefits of the dynamic global marketplace extend to minority businesses, and Africa and developing countries. To this end, the CBC will propose and support trade and investment initiatives designed to bridge the global digital divide, create jobs, improve infrastructure, promote sustainable development, and raise living and work standards for people of color around the globe. Moreover, the CBC will work to ensure that America’s international trade agenda and priorities also meet these goals.

* Increasing Affordable Housing

Opportunities. The CBC’s goal is to increase the nation’s homeownership rates. Home ownership is one of the best wealth creation vehicles for minority families. We will work with lending institutions and community organizations to ensure that minorities are afforded every opportunity to realize the dream of owning a home.

Obama's Typical Lie: Make government fiscally responsible & live within budget

Q: This year’s deficit will reach $455 billion. Won’t some programs you are proposing have to be eliminated?

OBAMA: Every dollar I’ve proposed, I’ve proposed an additional cut hat it matches. To give an example, we spend $15 billion a year on subsidies to insurance companies. It doesn’t help seniors get better. It’s a giveaway. I want to go through the federal budget line by line, programs that don’t work, we cut. Programs we need, we should make them work better. Once we get through this economic crisis, we’re going to have to embrace a culture of responsibility, all of us, corporations, the federal government, & individuals who may be living beyond their means.

McCAIN: I’d have an across-the-board spending freeze. I know how to save billions of dollars in defense spending. One would be the marketing assistance program. Another one would be subsidies for ethanol. I would fight for a line-item veto, and I would certainly veto every earmark pork-barrel bill.

Obama Lies: Bailout will unfreeze credit & allow businesses to function

Q: Which parts of the $700B bailout will help people?

OBAMA: Let me tell you what’s in the rescue package for you. Right now, the credit markets are frozen up and what that means is that small businesses can’t get loans. If they can’t get a loan, that means that they can’t make payroll. If they can’t make payroll, then they may end up having to shut their doors and lay people off. And if you imagine just one company trying to deal with that, now imagine a million companies all across the country. So it could end up having an adverse effect on everybody, and that’s why we had to take action. But we shouldn’t have been there in the first place.
