Americans Critical of Government Safety Net Still Depend On It

There are 33 comments on the www.nytimes.com story from Feb 13, 2012, titled Americans Critical of Government Safety Net Still Depend On It. In it, www.nytimes.com reports that:

Topix Staff Feature

The New York Times' Binyamin Appelbaum and Robert Gebeloff report that middle-class Americans often critical of government spending and the welfare state in general are increasingly reliant upon federal aid to get by. They put this trend in perspective:

In 2000, federal and state governments spent about 37 cents on the safety net from every dollar they collected in revenue, according to a New York Times analysis. A decade later...spending on the safety net consumed nearly 66 cents of every dollar of revenue.

And while more of this is going to families in the middle class and not to the poor, cultural resistance to state provision of social welfare has created a population suffering a kind of cognitive dissonance:

They are frustrated that they need help, feel guilty for taking it and resent the government for providing it.

The attitude displayed above may account for the decline in tax revenues some have blamed for the mushrooming of state and federal assistance costs. And while politicians compete to win over the affection of the middle class tax payer, the fact is, as Clive Crook of The Atlantic pointed out a few days ago, the central rung of America's income ladder pays less in taxes than its counterparts in the rest of the western world.

What do you think? Is the welfare state in peril due to taxpayer resistance to forking over the cash, or are Americans in peril due to the welfare state itself?

Obama condemned lazy Americans .Then does all he can to make them worse so he can use it as an excuse for his failure.

It’s like those pathetic bigoted idiots at the tea-bagger’s rallies screaming “Shut down the government” while salivating for cuts to social programs as they rely on Medicare and their Social Security checks to survive.

I find it pathetically amusing that these right-wing racist would cut off their only means just because the President is Black… I wish President Obama could cut off the federal funds for any right-wing who has criticized Government spending on entitlement programs.

There's a big disconnect in this country between the way people perceive things, largely due to complacent mainstream media and a noisy, obnoxious, and dishonest far right media noise machine, and the way things actually work.

We all need to realize that we need to cooperate, that government need not be the 'enemy,' and that what we need is reform and increased efficiency in government, not elimination of it.

Good example of the problem, and the kind of extremism that divides Americans.

He hasn't 'failed,' and doesn't need 'excuses.' Nor is he 'making people lazier.' That's all right wing noise.

Most of those people in welfare are healthy, they can work, and the government instead of giving them, should send them to work. Millions of people in this country are just abusing this country's generosity, and that's not fair. The government should have control over this.

really?
here on planet earth, it's the hugely biased mainstream media that is totally in the tank for obama, covering for him and his band of nincompoops and bureaucrats as they seek to control every aspect of our lives that's causing most of the problems.

LOL, not true. I know of many businesses mine included that cannot find people to work due to the govt. paying lazy people to stay at home. The fact is that a mother of 2 with all the govt subsidies including unemployment will make a gross income of roughly $34,000 a year. That is them sitting on their azz doing nothing.

Social security and medicare are not entitlement programs if the collector has paid in all their lives. Those that collect it in the revised form of welfare (thanks to Clinton) are the parasites. Odumbo could cut off federal funds to the right-wing criticizers and still have money left in the bank, the lazy lefties are the problem. While Odumbo is cutting back, take the angry black woman's blank tax-payer funded check, she needs to stay home instead of out blowing around like some socialite and quit punishing Americans of every race with her agenda.

And the mother of 2,3,4, gets at the end of the year $3.000 per kid. Go visit some of the neighborhoods invaded by illegal people, and legal residents living on welfare. Take a look at them and see if you see anything wrong with that people not to be able to work. They are young, and look very healthy. Go to one of the supermarkets the day they receive the welfare check, and look at them. You will cry from seeing that injustice. Probably your parents who have worked all their lives, and contributed to the system all their lives, still have to work after retirement, because their Social Security check is not enough to live. So it is very sad to see such injustice.

?? What business is that? When there are millions looking for work, you can't find anyone? Is it legal? Is it strictly commission? There are jobs selling door to door, but they pay less than the Chinese workers get. It's hard to get by on less than 40 cents per hour. On a bad day, they get nothing. It's like the lion chasing mice. He might catch some, but even if he does, he starves to death.

If you would pay a reasonable salary, you could have thousands of applicants within days. If you can't pay a reasonable salary, you should go out of business. Don't complain just because people want a decent salary for the work they do.

I look and I do see something wrong. There are no jobs. Talk with them and find out how many jobs they applied for in the past year. Mostly in the hundreds. Cry from the injustice? Certainly, it is very unjust that the government had a policy to eliminate most jobs. They have openly admitted it. And now you want to blame the victims. Way to go. No wonder everyone thinks conservatives have no heart.

Social Security is not a retirement plan. The SS plan is a compensation in lieu of ones retirement. It is a supplement. Not an entire retirement plan.

And when established, one was not to even receive the SS plan. An individual was to pay into it and receive it in lieu of their retirement. Here is the dirty little secret. the average life spam of an American during this time was 55. So the individual would be dead before they could receive it.

So where did the money go? It went to pay the interest to the Federal Reserve for FDR's Raw Deal.

Oh, you mean the SS money was invested in the federal government so we borrow less from China, and the SS fund grows. That sounds like a good plan. Money invested for 50 years should increase faster than inflation by a good bit so payouts can be larger, and they should be.

Joe you are clueless and it is evident that you have never run a successful business. What do you call a reasonable salary? I bet you are some union moron, unions are busted and make companies go bankrupt, how many times do the auto companies need to get bailed out to prove this. LOL

Oh dear god. Another that thinks we borrow money from China.*sigh*

Look, we do not borrow money from China. We are presently in a trade and currency war with China. About 1-2 years ago China devested 98% of all US holdings. Basically meaning they dumped all of their holdings of US bonds. Who bought those bonds? The Federal Reserve Bank. The Fed now owns 80% of all US debt and has complete control over the issuance of the American dollars.
