spud - You responded just as I would have predicted .... tossing
all the typically ignorant cliches of whiners like yourself.
First off, I did not suggest that employers should hire illegal
workers. As for fiduciary responsibility, that is a legal
term and OBLIGATION of any corporation. That you consider
fiduciary responsibility to mean that shareholders and such
"deserve all the monetary rewards" further demonstrates your
ignorance. Fiduciary responsibility also implies the need to
retain competent workers and provide for worker safety.
Finally, your contempt for shareholders "who do nothing but
supply money" only diminishes you. ONLY? Spud, get yourself
a clue or take a course in economics. Without that money
people like you don't even have jobs ... presuming you actually
have one in the first place. I'd also point out that while
workers are guaranteed their pay, shareholders are not guaranteed
any return on their investment, though that is certainly the
objective.
Management's first responsibility is to turn a profit in order
that a company remain sustainable. If it fails to do that it
goes out of business and you lose your job. If worker wages
and benefits result in a non-profitable product or service,
there is no reason to keep the doors open.
You totally agreed with OGs post which was in favor of hiring illegal aliens over higher priced Americans. Didn't you even read his post before you replied "I couldn't find anything wrong with that post"? That statement certainly made it look like you favor hiring illegal aliens.

spud - The point is that if wages and benefits paid to American
workers preclude the possibility for a company to manufacture
their product or render a service profitably, they will either
shut their doors OR move their business to a place allows them
to fulfill their fiduciary responsibility.

Incidentally, I think you misunderstood OG's post from the
beginning. He wasn't advocating the hiring of illegals. He
was trying to get it through your skull that if wages and
benefits are too high ... whether that company is unionized or
not ... there are those companies that will resort to either
breaking a union (if it exists in that business) or hire illegals
as a matter of survival. This is particularly true in industries
that CANNOT move offshore .... food processing being an example
of this.

In short, he was pointing out what happens, not endorsing it.

spud - Just for the record, we own and operate a business in the
agricultural sector that has 15 employees. The work is noisy and
dirty, but there is no other way to do what we do. Our lowest paid
worker earns 33% over the minimum wage in a state with one of the
3 highest minimum wage states in the nation. We have also paid full medical for the employee after 6 months with us. Right now
that benefit costs us $490 per month .... excluding family coverage
if he/she wishes to purchase it thru our company. We have had
ZERO turnover for the past 3 years and rarely have a worker call
in sick even though EVERY employee is cross-trained to do two or
more jobs. I work at least one day per month in every position
at our plant.
Now, having said all this, you should know that almost 2/3rds of
our employees are of Mexican descent. All have been cleared by
using e-verify, so you can drop any accusation that we hire
illegals. English is the language spoken on the job. No Spanish
is allowed except in the lunchroom.
So, you ask, with all this good stuff why are almost 2/3rds of
Mexican descent? Easy answer here, spud: less than 5% of our job
applicants are Americans as you might describe them. I've had
1 Anglo come to our door looking for work during the past 6
months even though the unemployment rate in our county is over
13%.
What's wrong with this picture, spud? What's wrong is that too
many Anglos think working in a noisy and dirty environment is
beneath them, even with decent wages and benefits considering
the size of our business and the fact we are in agriculture.
These are all facts, as is the case when I tell you I can take
a couple of propane tanks for our forklifts down for refilling
and see 6-10 Anglos loitering around the mini-markets and
fast food restaurant 2 miles away. Not one has ever asked if
we were hiring. I doubt 25% could pass a drug test or show up
on time every day for two weeks or not call in sick.

You sound like a pretty honorable guy if what you say is true. I don't, however, think the work is what is keeping the gringos from applying. I'd say it was the pay. Think how hard it would be to be to live on 33% more than minimum wage. For the record, I worked for a company that paid me very well and made a fortune in the process. They still pay me very well, pension, and they still make a fortune. I'm still grateful to my company for the class they displayed in dealing with their employees. Now I have my own vinyard and garden and I run our community garden. I know alot of people that don't mind getting dirty and working hard. Sometimes it just takes a little encouragement and sometimes it takes a good kick in the a$$. But they'll do it. And if you reread the post that you totally agreed with, you'll see that my discussion with OG was most definately about illegal aliens replacing Americans. Of course OG refers to them as undocumented as most pro illegals do. My first impression of you was that you were just another lawbreaking IA hiring employer. Thank you for using E-verify.

Fine. I agree. Just find some way other than a multi-billion dollar, idiotic, fence. The East Germans couldn't keep people from crossing a MUCH shorter fence with guard towers and mines. And we're going to stop people from crossing a fence HUNDREDS of miles long?? This is a pork project for someone's rich contracting buddies...

You've perhaps unintentionally illustrated the problem quite
well.

You seem to be implying that an entry level position with a
company should pay enough to live on. In our particular case
that entry level position requires little more than knowing
which end of the broom to hold and how to stack agricultural
product in a pile. It takes every bit of about 15 minutes to
learn how to do it. This person currently is paid $12.50 an
hour excluding another $2.75 for his medical coverage. I
don't regard that too little to apply for.

Was the first job you ever had one that would allow you to
buy a house, buy a new car, raise a family? If I were to
accept your point of view every job opening should be enough
to live on ..... and that is largely what is wrong with the
perspective of countless numbers of Americans. They want a
middle class existence for having a pulse and showing up.

Like I said, you're not the evil entity I thought you were when you inadvertantly supported hiring illegal aliens by supporting OGs post. I think you were so taken by his company first rhetoric that you failed to recognize that he was making a case for illegal aliens replacing American workers. My reply to you was based on the assumption that you too felt that hiring illegals to lower costs was an acceptable or smart business move. Again, thank you for using E-verify.
