Obama Appointee Suggests Radical Plan for Newspaper Bailout

Rosa Brooks, who has moved from the L.A. Times to the Pentagon, called for more "direct government support for public media" and government licensing of the news, which critics say would destroy the independent media.

Rosa Brooks offers a TERRIBLE idea. Government sanctioning and licensing of media is the last thing we need, besides cancer and AIDS.(There might be merit to reducing costs for distribution; be it postage for periodicals, or lower content costs as the Internet evolves and free information is paid for.)
There's no question the content of newspapers, the information making up news and commentary, is a valuable commodity. The biggest question of all is, how will that content be delivered going forward?
What we know is print journalism; newsrooms filled with reporters, paid for by single copy sales, subscriptions, and ad revenues. TV news was once a loss leader, generating ad revenues. This too is becoming a ever-less tolerated cost center/loss leader.
Obviously we're moving away from print on paper as the medium. What replaces print is the mystery. Once that evolves, the revenue supporting information gathering and investigating will move to the new distribution system, and journalism will move on to the new era.
Government licensing and sanction should be no part of the transition.

Where capitalism delivers but cannot inspire, socialism inspires despite never having delivered. Socialism’s history is littered with repeated failures and with human misery on a massive scale, yet it still attracts smiles rather than curses from people who never had to live under it.
Contrary to widely held beliefs, capitalism is not a system which exploits a large portion of society for the sake of a small minority of wealthy capitalists. Ironically, it is actually socialism that causes the systematic exploitation of labor. Since the socialist state holds a universal monopoly on labor and production, no economic incentive exists for the socialist state to provide anything more than minimum physical subsistence for the workers except to perhaps prevent riots or revolutions. Exploitation is inherent to the nature of socialism because individuals cannot live for their own sake, rather, they exist merely as means to whatever ends the socialist rulers -- the self-proclaimed spokesman of "society," may have in mind.
Leftists are driven by irrational guilt. Guilt for being greedy, guilt for being successful -- basically, guilt for being human. They act against their own interests in order to soothe this guilt. Results do not matter. What matters to the left is that they have demonstrated good intentions, and that the unintended consequences of their policies are not a sign of failure, but merely another opportunity to demonstrate even more good intentions through even more irrational policy.
Income earners owe nothing else to their fellow man; they have met their social obligations. If "giving something back" means anything, it should be the admonition to thieves and social parasites: people who have taken and given nothing in return. We have it ass backwards. Highly productive people (the rich) like Sam Walton and Bill Gates are held up to social ridicule while thieves, bums and other social parasites are shown passion and concern and have become society's mascots.
Socialism fails? It put a man on the moon. Capitalism wouldn't have even tried.

Obama is trying to keep the dead and dying companies alive on very expensive life support systems. Just unplug them and let them go.

This is like having Teddy Roosevelt save the buggy whip industry once automobiles were invented. Face it, print newspapers waste paper and they're already behind on the latest news when they hit the stands.

I reckon it has become unacceptable, politically incorrect, and socially insensitive to call somebody a communist. I seldom hear the word anymore. The word seems to have a connotation that communists are bad people which they are. I think there are a lot of young folks who do not know what Marxism is due to failure in public education. It has become more acceptable in society to call communists more polite names like progressives which sounds harmless and attractive. Communism preys upon discontentment in their government which I think is happening today. Communism appears to be a remedy for all kinds of social problems such as government economic failure, unemployment, poverty, and health care. The reality is that the populace is soon deceived by the dicipline of communism. They find out that communism can be ruthless, inhumane, and self seeking, which destroys private innitiative and all the goodness that the public thought they would receive from a communist government. That is why communism fails and has never worked.

WHAT????

You quoted my comments in your post. I said a newspaper bailout is a terrible idea. I said that content that has been delivered in print will soon be delivered another way.

I suggested we would pay for what we now get for free online, but we pay 50 cents or a dollar for a newspaper today. That's how publishers have supported their reporters, columnists, and assorted employees, along with ad revenue, for several hundred years.

So how do you figure I'm advocating "control" over the media? And how would you transition reporters away from paper and ink (which is happening now) to new technology? If you have a great idea, I'm interested in what that is.

I don't care if you call me a Communist; we're not going to settle that one tonight. LOL!!!

Do you really believe that? It all sounds fine, however....it is not the what is said but what gets done. I see that the quality of one's/community/social quality of existence is directly dependant on the ability of whatever entity's to ATTEND!! May you be giving folks too much credit?? You see anyone out there who actually gives a "hoot" about anything beyond their nose? Not more than you can count on both hands I bet.
Do you see anyone in any public/policital position who is going to really tell the truth and no special spin?? No...so it is up to us to make sure we have the real deal on any report.
IF THIS ISSUE CAME TO PUBLIC VOTE YOU REALLY THINK THE "PUBLIC" WOULD LOOK AT IT AND BE SURE THEY UNDERSTOOD THE ISSUE OR DO YOU THINK THEY MAY JUST CLICK THE BUTTON AND GO ON???
THAT IS HOW I SEE ALL OF THIS WORKING!
Regardless of political affilitation, do not deny me access to information, do not deny anyone free speech rights and yeh, I do want to know what other people think about "it" no matter the topic. AND NO NOT MAKE ME PAY FOR THE USE OF THIS OR FUTURE INTERNET ACCESSABILITY!!! Finance this just like anything else, sell ad space and keep the Government out of it....IF a simple contributation is the order great, but do you trust there will be no sensorship??? No attempt to influence our actions by controling the information we have to think with/about?? Yeah, sure!!!!
Some of us follow current events closely. Others barely pay attention and watch a lot of reality TV, or hit the gym, or knit, or whatever. Everybody pays attention when it matters to them. I was an election judge in November; the lines of voters tell me people get interested.

About paying for content: It costs 75 cents to buy the Chicago Tribune at 7/11. More and more people don't bother to pay the 75 cents; instead they now have the option of reading the same thing online for free. They even update the online content as events unfold, while I carry my 18 hour old print newspaper home from work.

Because people don't pay the 75 cents, newspapers are going bankrupt and folding. Me, I want at least one paper in Chicago with reporters who investigate politicians, talk about important issues, and cover the White Sox and da Bears.

If they have to charge me a buck a day to do what they do, fine. They can stop with the messy ink and let me read (exclusively) online. I won't be paying 75 cents at 7/11. Otherwise nothing changes.

It's going to happen, maybe very soon. For you too, if you have an alternative, I'd love to hear about it.

Obama Defended Himself But Not His Country at Summit of Americas

After Nicaraguan Marxist President Daniel Ortega attacked America for 50 minutes in his speech, Obama smiled and shook his hand.

Latin American leaders continued to pile on the US at the Summit of the Americas on Saturday.

Barack Obama defended himself from attacks aimed at America today- but would not defend the United States.

And, as usual, he was ignorant on his history.

In his 17-minute address to the summit, Obama departed from his prepared remarks to mildly rebuke Ortega.

"To move forward, we cannot let ourselves be prisoners of past disagreements. I'm grateful that President Ortega did not blame me for things that happened when I was three months old. Too often, an opportunity to build a fresh partnership of the Americas has been undermined by stale debates. We've all heard these arguments before."

Actually, the president misspoke on the sequence of events in Cuba. The invasion of CIA-trained rebels at the Bay of Pigs in Cuba occurred in April 1961. Obama was born August 4, 1961.

Controlled?

The libs are afraid of the "RADICAL RIGHT" and why is that?!!?

The libs TRIED to get big in talk radio, but the ratings were so LOW that they went off the air.
***** YES - I know what the "fairness doctrine" is...
JUST because you don't know what the fairness doctrine is don't ASSume that everyone else is as stupid.*********

Why do the liberals want to control the radio media?
Is it because talk radio is so popular and so " right" when it comes to exposing the liberal news bias in the main stream media!

WHY do you think talk radio is so popular and WHY do you think the liberals can not keep a program on air?

the liberals are threated by talk radio and want EQUAL time... only problem to that plan is - no one wants to listen to the liberals !!!! Sorry - must suck to be you!
