US jobless rate hits 10.2% as 190,000 jobs lost

WASHINGTON (AFP)– The US unemployment rate jumped to 10.2 percent in October as 190,000 jobs were shed, the government said Friday in data highlighting ongoing struggles of an economy emerging from recession.

The Labor Department report, seen as one of the best indicators of economic momentum, showed a rise in the jobless rate, up from 9.8 percent in September, to the highest since 1983. But the number of jobs lost narrowed to the lowest level in over a year.

The jobless rate shot above the key 10 percent barrier for the first time since June 1983, even though the agency revised down the number of job cuts in the prior two months.

"The employment numbers themselves when you look at the revisions weren't all that bad, but the headline of 10 percent was huge psychologically," said Robert MacIntosh, economist at Eaton Vance.

MacIntosh said that if current trends continue, the economy could see job gains in January or February but that unemployment may rise with labor force and population growth.

"This means a slower, more frustrating economic recovery," he said.

Overall, the monthly report was worse than expectations for a 10 percent jobless rate and 175,000 job losses despite the improving trend with the downward revision of job losses in August and September.

Nonfarm payrolls fell by 219,000 in September (instead of the prior estimate of 263,000) and by 154,000 in August (revised from 201,000).

The number of unemployed persons increased to 15.7 million. Since the start of the recession in December 2007, the number of unemployed has risen by 8.2 million, and the unemployment rate has grown by 5.3 percentage points, the Labor Department said.

At the rate we are losing jobs, the official unemployment rate will exceed 20% by May 1, 2010.

By the middle of next year, 10% unemployment will look good.

U.S. employers cut a deeper-than-expected 190,000 jobs in October, government data showed on Friday, driving the unemployment rate to 10.2 percent, the highest in 26-1/2 years.

The Labor Department said the unemployment rate was the highest since April 1983. It revised job losses for August and September to show 91,000 fewer jobs lost than previously reported.

Analysts polled by Reuters had expected payrolls to drop by 175,000 and the jobless rate to edge up to 9.9 percent from 9.8 percent in September.

The labor market is being watched for signs whether the economic recovery that started in the third quarter can be sustained without government support. The economy grew at a 3.5 percent annualized rate in the July-September period, probably ending the most painful U.S. recession in 70 years.

Payrolls have declined for 22 consecutive months now, throwing 7.3 million people out of work since December 2007, when the recession started.

These comments do nothing but demean the opposing view. Does anyone know why Barney Frank made these comments? The Pioneer Press needs to do some better reporting to let you understand why these comments were made. Unfortunately, the local media softballs coverage of Michelle Bachman for some strange reason.

I believe the mainstream residents of Minnesota would be aghast at the things Ms. Bachmann says. At the rally yesterday there were signs equating the healthcare bill to the Genocide at Dachau in WWII. Apparently, if this bill goes through we all will die.

Further, Ms. Bachmann is in general under informed. She makes irrational off the cuff remarks that are truly embarrassing to Minnesota.

One thing I am interested to learn is how did Ms. Bachmann get here. I recently learned that she used to be Gretchen Carlson's nanny. Twenty years later she is in the House of Representatives? I guess it helps to have Republican big-wigs as friends. Now just if she could stop and think and actually read back things she has said maybe she could tone it down and respond with constructive ideas instead of scare tactics.
