Letters to the editor: Start school earlier

There are 4 comments on the Pasadena Star-News story from Sep 1, 2010, titled Letters to the editor: Start school earlier. In it, Pasadena Star-News reports that:

PUSD needs to start the school year before Labor Day, not weeks after. By starting so late, many of our students lose the chance for early admission to college, lose the chance to take summer classes outside of the local city college and even miss many Boy Scout/Girl Scout and sports summer camps.

Ms. Stotlar is in one camp - before Labor Day, and there are just as many parents that are dying to start AFTER Labor Day....one size does not fit all. I would agree that PUSD seems to be starting later than usual - but as soon as PUSD tries to start BEFORE Labor Day like Monrovia, or Arcadia or any of a number of private schools -- the letters in wondering "Where did our summer go? Why do we start before Labor Day" -- will start rolling in.
And the people you want to ask -- the teachers union. In most school districts setting the calendar is a negotiable item....

re letter 'on gas prices':

Dude, how about they CUT the dam taxes on gas and other fuel. That's how you lower the price. Not some fascistic 'cap' on prices -- that stuff doesn't work and of course violates all free market principles.

Recently I met with district officials as a resident and PUSD parent on the issuea of the school year. My interest is in seeing deep and meaningful outreach and transparency on this and other PUSD issues in my community.

Last spring when the current school year was being finalized, I had many parents express concern about having a voice. As an active member of the community I serve on various commissions and committees, and have been frequently was asked by parents and community members who to contact to discuss the issue. I always refered folks to UTP and the District; according to folks who called or wrote, the District response was, inevitibly, to the effect that their "hands were tied" as essentially the school year was subject to UTP approval, and uniformaly UTP simply did not respond to messages left.

I have an opinion about the school year, but I will keep that to myself for now. This is, however, a great opportunity for the teacher's union to demonstrate that it cares about the community by spearheading an open outreach process -- the kind we Pasadena residents expect of our institutions.

The district, under the new Chief of Human Resources, has expressed a willingness to engage in the broadest of community listening in order to inform its thoughts on the next round of school year planning. I am jopeful that the teacher's union will, likewise, be leading the effort to reach a community consensus on the calendar.

As a strong believer in the Pasadena Way -- consensus seeking through extensive community dialogue -- nothing would please me more. As a PUSD teacher, in addition to a parent and resident, I would be thrilled to see my associaiton engaged in this process.

09-02-10 Pasadena God's not the standard
What is to prevent God's plan from including rule changes from time to time?
Ironically, it is the atheist who can claim to come closest to having an objective, moral standard.~Dave E. Matson~ Pasadena

Reply: On target, Dave.
God in the Old Testament tells us to bash the heads of infidels and demands of us that we be willing to sacrifice our children's lives at His orders, and the God of traditional Christianity and Islam damns us for eternity if we do not worship him in the right manner. Is this a nice way to behave?
