"People elected me because they thought I would make thoughtful decisions, while facing a changing set of circumstances," McAustin said.

"It's potentially illegal to commit one's vote to an issue prior to the issue coming before the City Council," Gordo said.

These statements smack of the incumbent disease affecting the political class these days. Elect me so you can find out how I'm going to vote to screw you or not! The reason there is a tea party movement at all is that we the people (yes us ordinary voters in your community, state or nation) are sick of putting up with the b--- s---.

Before the next election, shouldn't the voters have an honest indication you plan to put a high priority on dealing with the city's budget deficit and addressing pension reform since you rely on State PERS which has unfunded liabilities which just happens to be in dire straits. The city is spending much time, money, staff and citizen participation updating the General Plan. Do you plan to uphold the adopted new General Plan or continue the city council practice of ignoring it and over ruling even your own planning commission recommendations?

Circumstances change but we are interested in those values and principles you hold dear and will not compromise (taking the measure of a woman or man so to speak). As for it being illegal to pre-commit your vote prior to city council consideration, it seems to occur frequently when you have city staff giving away the show arrogantly with shoddy staff work and indifference to the citizen contributions. Establishing good public policy is not copping a vote!

the "TEA Leaves" tell me that abandoning GOD
for Militant Glenn Beck Paganism (or Militant Mormon Patriotism) is just as sinful as Satanic Liberalism.

Any "TEA" victory will be tainted as it was obtained
through Satanic means. But who cares as long as you win!!

Sarah Palin is a blathering idiot. She knows nothing about the constitution nor how the government works and I jump for joy at the thought of her being the Republican name on the 2012 Presidential ticket because Democrats will clean the floor with her. She's just another yahoo from the tea party along with Sharron "I've got juice with him" Angle and Christine "Scientists have created lab mice with fully functioning human brains" O'Donnell and Rand "I reject the 1964 Civil Rights Bill" Paul. The tea party wants to kill:

Social Security

Medicare

Food Stamps

Welfare

Unemployment insurance

Public schools

Department of Education

VA Hospitals

The 14th Amendment

The 1964 Civil Rights Act

The reason they want to kill all of these is simple: the tea partiers are elderly, white, racist bigots who have already lived their lives and don't want to contribute towards the needs of others nor put up with minorities. Mark Montgomery NYC, NY

I would take the Tea Party "movement" A LOT more seriously had they surfaced during the worst period of our country. Namely, the Bush years.

thank goodness some politicians understand that pledges do nothing but paralyze the legislative process. It hardly "smack[s] of the incumbent disease" - it is a sign of an intelligent person who decides questions based on the facts in front of him or her not ideology.

Each election is a chance to throw the bum out for casting votes you disagree with or take a chance on a new challenger who you think will make a better candidate. Indeed, an incumbent runs on their record of votes - no need for pledges. I vote based on who I think has the best interest of my community in mind.

Will I agree with every vote my elected representatives make? Of course not. But if I agree that they are making informed and rational decisions I would likely reelect them absent a more persuasive challenger.

Hey NY dufus, Tea Party stands for fiscal responsibility, not your idiotic list. The liar in chief and his far left disciples are taking the country hard left over the cliff, and we need to straighten out NOW.

BTW, how is NY doing with the left in control? Almost as bad as Cali with our progressive Dem Legislature, correct?

Actually the Tea Party reminds me of their old Nazi Brownshirt manifestation when minorities are scapegoated (Jews and Gypsies then, Hispanics and Muslims today). They have also both been used to take advantage of bad economic times which were created by the right, but were used to pummel the left unjustly. They both quack like ducks, so that's what they are.

You're absoloutely correct, this guy is a stupid loon who doesn't take the time to understand the basics. Not only can the State not go to Bankruptcy, but Cities cannot go to Bankruptcy court for the Pensions. Pensions are excepted. These Tea Party idiots need to do their homework or get back under the sheets!

I don't want thee Obama Lama Ding Dong to be president anymore than you do! But to put Tea Party PaulBot Paganism in charge of the USA is no different than Satan himself being elected as a Republican.

Is that what you want? Do you actually want Satan to become a Republican?

Traditionally the Devil has always been a Pro-Gay, Baby Murdering Liberal Democrat and or Pro Free to do anything no matter how disgusting Pro-Drugs Anti-Christian Libertarian.

But if this continues, if the Tea-Peeple win big, Satan will switch parties!! Is that really what you want?
