He won in a three-way primary, because of problems with the other two candidates, one too liberal and national, and the other too rich, Establishment, and Clintonite, and slick. So he was the neither of the other two candidate. Not impressive. Virginia is not typical, not a swing state, in normal times. Sen. Allen made a big fool of himself and lost. And when John Warner retired, Mark Warner was able to present himself as a very moderate Democrat, which I think he is.
