That's why there's so much opposition to drilling for oil. We might actually get money FROM the government instead of always handing it over to them.

That would completely upset good ol boy network.

Consider this state is part of the USA, so why aren't we allowed to drill for oil in the lower 48 and reap the rewards also? We would then not have to rely on foreign oil.

YOU WENT THERE ex-pitcher, didn't ya? I don't understand why Alaska can do it and we can't, sure i know all about the pipeline. But there are states here that have oil, we could drill and put folks to work.

The richest state in the country with no major budget problems and Sara couldn't manage one full term. Sounds like presidential material to me.

Quoted from the article; "...This day is so widely anticipated in Alaska that the announcement of the Permanent Fund Dividend amount was carried live on television statewide, and dozens tuned in to watch a live webcast by the governor's office."

this program has been going on since the 80s...$1100 is DOWN from what people used to receive, I left in 1999 and we were getting close to $2000...
The state had the proceeds to invest intelligently, something the feds never get....

I like the thought but its not based in reality...the reality is that most states are drilling and the ONLY state that could do what Alaska did is North Dakota bc there are few people for the amount of mineral reserves.

It is down slightly. It is a rolling five-year average on the earnings, from which the pay-out is derived.

As for leaving in 1999, so much for the part of receiving the dividend which requires that one certify that one intends to remain an Alaska resident indefinitely.

That's because in 1999 there were only eight citizens. Now there's almost THIRTEEN!

Actually, I grew up in a rural New England town with a population of around two thousand. This town had one traffic light which only flashed, where the two main roads crossed. There was a market, a gas station, a couple of churches, and a bank. We had no neighbors. We were so remote that the road we lived on was named after us - because we were the only ones on it. Beautiful New England countryside. Chopping wood, raking leaves, the smell of spring, the beautiful bright blue skies, the breathtaking black star-filled nights... I understand your claim Far Away, but that was 30 years ago. I do miss it and visit occasionally, but it would be hard for me to adjust moving back to that.
