Are Republicans Attacking Capitalism?

Politics Staff Story

Now that Romney is the clear front-runner, the non-Romneys have been busy laying in to his business career.

On Tuesday, Gingrich’s supporters released an attack ad calling Romney a “predatory corporate raider.” And Rick Perry slammed Romney's former company, Bain Capital:

They're vultures that are sitting out there on the tree limb, waiting for a company to get sick. And then they swoop in, they eat the carcass, they leave with that and they leave the skeleton.

Other Republicans and news sources have pointed out that their criticisms smack of class warfare. Rick Santorum says the attacks on Romney are attacks on capitalism, and Buzzfeed Politics ran a story on “Rick Perry, Communist.”

Today, Politico reports, Gingrich apologized for “going too far.” ABC news reports that Rick Perry has dropped the “vulture capitalism” line from his stump speeches.

Your take: Are the attacks fair? Or are Perry and Gingrich slamming legitimate capitalism?

I agree with you. I like Paul first and then Romney second. I was impressed with Romney last night when I found out his father was not all that and that Romney split off from his father and made his own way in the world. He didn't inherit money. So for him to make 300 billion dollars on his own, he is one smart guy. He's level headed, even tempered and something he said last night showed me he is about managing things, he is the type of person who is into solving the problems and doing so quickly, IMO. Paul really gets into the systemic problems, the economic problems and he tells people the truth about the effects of the debt on our spending in the future. Even Santorum at least stands for something, he believes in what he is doing. I'm with you, if Paul or Romney are not the nominee, I am not voting for Newt. I would vote for Obama rather than Newt, and I didn't vote for Obama last time. I don't trust Newt as far as I can see him.

Because what Moral Values and Social Conservative means in the South isn't necessary what the character stands for on the Plains, through the Heartlands or, are the priority of the Northern Conservatives. The GOP has had those divisions since 1968. Every group compromises something to fit under the tent of Conservatives.

Gingrich has no business calling him a "Reagan conservative". Reagan believed strongly in moral values and practiced them throughout his life. Reagan's political style is far closer to Romney's than any of the other candidates. Newt's bullying attitude is the anthithesis of Reagan. Too many people confuse Newt's bold "street fighter" attitude as synonymous with conservatism. They think Romney's moderate because he has manners and shows restraint in what he says. Newt has some very liberal and progressive views. He has said numerous times that FDR was the greatest president of the 20th century, among other things.

Whoever will give Newt money, he is for that position, that cause. He's no conservative. If you pay him to say global warming is real, he will say global warming is real. If you pay him to say global warming is not real, he will say it is not real. He's just into making money in politics. He made 3 million dollars last year as a Fox employee. Think how much Hannity and O'Reilly must make if Newt made 3 million just being on Fox shows for a few minutes every night. Add in Limbaugh's radio contract is 500 million dollars. So Hannity probably makes 20 mil. a year on Fox and another 20 mil or more on his radio show, these guys are billionaires, and they take their money and create defense companies that go into Iraq and get billions in governemnt contracts, plus they take their money and buy stocks in Halibuton, in the Spade Defense Index to buy into all of the war corporations, they buy into Exxon and BP, then Bush invades Iraq, gives out a trillion dollars in contracts, gets Exxon and BP the oil in Iraq, presto, bingo, Hannity and Limbaugh make a couple billion dollars more. This is why Hannity keeps selling a war in Iran. It would be big, huge money for him, so he could care less that trillions are spend in Iran instead of here on this country. Hannity is a war profiteer who is trying to elect Newt because Newt guaranteed Hannity a war in Iran. That is why the Jewish guy in Las Vegas gave Newt 5 million dollars. Newt promised him a war with Iran to protect Israel. This is dirty politics that Oxyclean can fix.

I find it interesting that many of you are falling hook line and sinker for this Democrat ploy. The timing is impecable as always when some bit of dirt comes out about a Republican.
I find it funny also that matters like what is currentt causing so many to faom at the mouth about Newt was, "A personal matter between him and his wife" when it came to Clinton dishonoring the the office and position of President.
This entire thing is no more than a Democrat trick to split the vote so they can get obama reelected. The first priority has got to be to get rid of the POS that currently occupies the White House.

Don't you see the double standard? Yes, I agree with you that it's a democratic ploy. But now Gingrich is trying to say that it's personal between him and his wife, just like Clinton did when Newt was calling him out. The inconsistency is glaring. Newt proclaimed to the world last night that he really wasn't sorry for his infidelitiy. Do you really think that outburst came from a repentant man? Regardless of what the intentions were of the MSM, republicans need to understand that the question was legitimate. Voters have the right to know if Newt is a sleazebag. Newt thinks Romney should release his tax returns... that somehow there's relevancy in that. Yet he thinks he can exhibit grotesque immoral conduct in his personal life and for some reason voters shouldn't know about it. Rather than confronting the question like a man, Newt exhibited consummate cowardice in shifting the blame to the media.
