I think it's funny the question of where is the religious exemption for notaries. A notary is not approving the wedding, they are merely recording that it happened. Why would they need an exemption.

Because people are generally stupid and can't be trusted to have a clue about what they're doing. Why bother to think about something when you can be outraged by it instead?

They record marriages every day for people that they know n-o-t-h-i-n-g about, and don't think twice about it as long as it's one man and one woman getting married. They could be divorced six times, child abusers, murderers, tax cheats... They could have illegitimate children strewn all across the country. They could be marrying each other to get on the insurance plan one of them has at work. They could have beat the crap out of their former spouse(s).

Any number of horrible evil wrongs could be in their past, but THAT'S ALL GOOD as long as one person is male and the other is female, they're good to go.

But let a loving, caring gay couple show up and it's the end of the freaking world. How else does one characterize such thought processes (or lack thereof) than simply stupid??

" "If you are a Notary Public who performs marriages and you refuse to perform a marriage for a couple due to a personís race ... sexual orientation, ph.... or national origin, you may be subject to a claim of discrimination," Cathy Beaudoin, who is in charge of licensing notaries in the state, wrote. "

Actually, I think a more appropriate action would be termination due to insubordination.
