NYT: Teachers wonder, why the scorn?

Mar 3, 2011 Full story: www.msnbc.msn.com 169

The jabs Erin Parker has heard about her job have stunned her. Oh you pathetic teachers, read the online comments and placards of counterdemonstrators. You are glorified baby sitters who leave work at 3 p.m. You deserve minimum wage.

Even in a country that is of two minds about teachers Americans glowingly recall the ones who changed their lives, but think the job with its summers off is cushy education experts say teachers have rarely been the targets of such scorn from politicians and voters.

Why people go to private schools.

Don't worry, the Republicans will make all the schools the same by taking away funding from ALL the schools. They will make the class sizes of 40 or more students.

THere are Private and/or Charter schools for EVERY student, troubled or not. Some are designed toward the physically handicapped. Some are oriented toward the learning disabled. Some are exclusively for "problem children". Some a for the violent. And yes, some are for the "cream of the crop".
One of own children went to a Private school for the learning disabled. Two others were homeschooled. One more went to a Parochial school. All made far more progress, in far less time, than in Public school, and at a fraction of the cost. The learning disabled child learned more in the first year of Private School, than in 6 years of Public School. For that matter, instead of assistance from Public service agencies, I got a hard time. When they occasionally tested the children for reading comprehension, they found that the kids were 2 - 3 grade levels higher than PS students. The same for Math, history, Science, etc. All expenses were completely "out of pocket", no vouchers, no reimbursement. During the home visits, my home was also inspected, as if there were an abuse complaint.
Apples to apples? Public school classrooms teach to the slowest child, or ignore the them. Public schools may be ok for the average child (80 - 120 IQ, no disabilities, minor problems), but any that are out of the norm get short shrift and slow down the learning process for the rest of the students.
Unfortunately, private, parochial schools can deny children with Atusim, ADHD and learning disabled from their schools as they do not have special ed to contend with.

It is nauseating to hear teachers complain about how tough they have it....or worse still, when they act they care about the kids. Their only concern is their socialist, self-serving union and protecting their lavish benefits and pay packages for working short days half the year. The rest of the world is going through a financial crisis. It is time for these over-paid, under-worked dilettantes to start sharing the burden. The American people have lost patience and sympathy for teachers and their amoral unions.
So what is it called when teachers spend $500 or more out of their own pocket? I would quit buying supplies unless it is covered by the school budget. Teachers spend quite a few dollare of their own money for the school.

How about public flogging for every scumbag teacher who'se students do not all pass state tests? How about fines of $5000 for every teacher's students that do not pass tests?
If these socialist crybabies want to put their money where there gaping mouths are, I would love to see it but you never will. They just want their overpaid half-day, part year babysitting jobs. They actually all hate the kids they pretend to teach.
I got a better idea, just expel all the losers who do not do their homework, skip classes and their unruley behavior. Once all the losers are gone then the classrooms will be very controllable.

Every summer off, every weekend off, every holiday off, and they still cry and complain, yeah I think people are right....They are a bunch of crybabies.
It is NOT the teachers who set up the school year, it is the STATE GOVT, who determines the school year. It is the state who decides every detail of the school year. I remember in Mich that the State was going to extend the school year but it was the Businesses of the state said that it would affect Travel and visitors that complained they would lose money if the school year was to start 2 weeks before Labor Day, the State relented and left the school start time after labor day. Therefore it wasnt the teacher but the State of Michigan doing biding of Businesses!!!!!!

Class size has little to do with actual teaching and learning. Most grew up with larger class sizes and we didn't have the problem but did have the paddle and our parents envolvment.
