This tobaccco tax increase as proposed is definitely a WIN-WIN-WIN-WIN for the State of WV. It increases much needed available revenues, it will improve population health on several fronts, it will save thousands of youth from ever using tobacco, and it will put billions of dollars in saved health care and occupational costs back in future State budgets!
Thousands of substance abusers will be helped! Thousands on Medicaid who are enabled to quit their nicotine addiction by the added cessation programs dedicated specifically to help them quit will put thousands of dollars a year back into their households ($2,000 per year per each 1 pk per day smoker)!
Now that's policy-driven population health care!!
Additionally, the Legislature should NOT be swayed by the industry's delaying, phase in tax plan they will be pushing (just like they push their deadly products!). A phase-in will significantly lessen the population health effect and the revenue generated for the State.
