boehner is an all-around azzhole just like pelosi....

but, what would be the grounds for this request?

that a person that was in the military lived a long time?

why seek to honor a person for living a long time and also seek to cut Social Security benefits on others that live a long time....

This is simply more government "feel good" BS.....

Was this necessary in a time of financial crisis and excessive government debt? Our vetrans are honored at their funerals. I'm sure this man would not want this level of fuss.

Once again boner shows his contempt for veterans! Maybe the ceremony would inconvenience him on his way to the Congressional tanning booth! Boner is a dick of the first order. Typical rethug!

Boehner spokesman Mike Steel said the speaker and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., would seek Defense Department permission for a ceremony for Buckles at Arlington National Cemetery.

Buckles died Sunday on his farm in Charles Town, W.Va., at the age of 110. He had been the last surviving American veteran of World War I.

The episode turned what West Virginia lawmakers had hoped would be easy approval for the rare honor for Buckles into a finger-pointing dispute with partisan overtones.

It was unclear late Thursday how the disagreement would end. Asked whether Boehner would be supportive if the Senate approved a resolution allowing Buckles’ remains to lie in the Rotunda, Steel said,“We’ll see what the Senate does.”

The honor requires a congressional resolution or the approval of congressional leaders, according to the office of the architect of the Capitol.

The bodies of prominent citizens have been displayed in the Rotunda on 30 occasions, starting in 1852 with Henry Clay, a Kentucky senator and congressman. Others include Presidents Lincoln and Reagan, unknown soldiers from America’s wars and civil rights hero Rosa Parks.

Steel said Boehner and Reid will ask Defense Secretary Robert Gates to allow a memorial service for Buckles at Arlington National Cemetery,“surrounded by honored veterans of every American war.”

Reid spokesman Jon Summers said Reid and Boehner were “discussing alternatives.” Summers would provide no additional detail.

The family really did not wanted the body shipped to DC for viewing. They agreed that it would cost the GOV money which is an unnecessary expense.
They also stated they didn't want to make this a political issue.

The family has also expressed that they want him buried in WV. A decision has not been made by the family yet as to his resting place. The family wishes should be respected

Buckles lived on Rt. 9 between Kearnesville and Charles Town WV. He had a large farm which he raised cattle and crops He road his tractor up to his 92 birthday. He had around care at his home.

Flags in WV are flown at half mass

My daughter was a neighbor of Buckles and said he was a man who lived life to the fullest and worked on his farm from morning to dusk. Everyone called him Mr Buck who knew him. He enjoyed telling stories when he was a prisoner during WW11.His WW1 stories were not spoke of as he aged.

RIP
Mr. Buck

I'm a veteran--and a liberal--and I don't think Buckles desrves any special recognition.
He's not a decorated veteran, just another guy--like me and millions of others--who served.

If he's entitled to be buried at Arlington, that's fine if it's what he wanted and his family chooses to do it, but placing him in the Rotunda, and lowering flags to half-mast, is inappropriate unless those considerations are given to all other veterans, too.
