New Yorkers using food stamps will not be allowed to spend them on sugar-sweetened drinks under an obesity-fighting proposal being put forward by Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Governor David Paterson.

Where does NY draw the line? Soda is full of sugar. Will they let diet soda go through? How about the majority of the items on the juice shelf? If it's not 100% juice, no purchase allowed? No Gatorade, Powerade, flavored waters full of sugar? No ice cream, pies,- how about yogurt, the name brands of yogurt are crammed with sugar? Candy bars? Ready made puddings? Seriously, how can you single out soda when there are so many grocery products that have sugar (or its equivalent) as the top ingredient? And don't think for a moment that a minimum wage cashier is going to be the least interested in reading labels to uphold this.

Food stamps should be for FOOD necessary to sustain life, not for soda, candy, cakes, pies, ice cream, potato chips, and other junk food.
