Area lawmakers to remind governor of commitment to keep charity hospital open

Local lawmakers said the looming state Medicaid cuts aren't likely to cause the closure of LSU Health Sciences Center-Monroe, but they could cripple it.

Everyone should pay very close attention to this matter. A huge segment of the people treated at the charity hospitals are working citizens who make too much money to qualify for Medicaid and not enough to buy insurance. Also, many of our older people with Medicare who can't afford deductibles or supplemental insurance utilize the charity system. People with Medicaid or commercial insurance visit private sector providers for healthcare. Where are the people who fall into these gaps going to go when they don't exist?
