Where does the sea glass on Seahams beaches come from? How much can be found in one day? I would love to learn more!

Hi Diana,

I've been trying to find out but my best guess is that there was a lot of glass industry a little up the coast at Sunderland from about 150 years ago until quite recently. I guess that the action of longshore drift has moved some of the sediment from the Tees Estuary out to sea and it made landfall again, full of the remains of the glassblower's trash bin... everywhere from Seaham down to Whitby.

Sea Glass at Seaham is comparatively rare now, as little as ten years ago you could probably have picked up a bucketful in a day, now you would be lucky to find ten good pieces.(but could still fill a pocket with tiny bits) There is a bit of an art to finding it, you have to time your visit to the more extreme phases of the tide and hope the weather is not too rough, rough weather exposes a lot more but you will usually find it has 'damage' that heals again after a spell of less extreme waves.

There used to be a glassworks on the site which the new dock company warehouses currently occupy. It was located directly opposite the old gas works. I believe a lot of the Seaham beach glass comes from there, but there also has to be a fair amount of it which has come from numerous youths smashing their beer bottles over the years and the motion of the sea and sand has worn it down and smoothed it off. I hope this has helped.

In a small beach area on the Central Coast of California, we experienced a great amount of gravel washing upon the beach front approximately 1/8 mile in length. This gravel contained large amounts of unusual pieces of sea glass. We had about 3 full months of this gravel and glass, then it DISAPPEARED. Am I to understand that longshore drift was the cause of this and if so how or when could i expect the gravel to return. I miss it! there were such unique glass pieces found last year in all that gravel. I am guessing that it was between Nov. thru January that the best pieces began to show. Can you help me find some answers to this question???

Even without a storm, currents can move sand and gravel in and out and also down the beach. Here where we live, there was almost no sand. Now there is sand for about 150 yards from the rocks. There have been no storms or unusual waves. When there is sand in, almost no sea glass is found. When the base rock can be seen, the glass is more likely to be found. I believe if you wait, you will see the glass again. An alternative is to get diving gear. You would probably find the glass just beyond the low tide line under water! From OdysseySeaGlass
