The bullying that took place in the yard was unreal and it wasn't done by the nuns. Of course I can only tell the truth about Nazareth House as I didn't live in Scotland or England. Those who threw their weight around just for the sake of hurting the innocent would be the ones I'd be looking to report to the police for child abuse. And by the way Deirdre Collette Milligan was in our group St Annes but you left long before she went back to America

Bernadette Quinn, it is very naive to suggest from your post that abuse only took place in the Nazareth Houses in Scotland and England, when in actual fact, it was endemic not only in the UK, but worldwide. It is well documented that abuse by Nazareth House nuns was endemic throughout these homes. I cannot believe that you are seriously suggesting that it did not take place in Nazareth House in Belfast where there are many posts here about that very Nazareth House. Of course bullying went on by children towards other children in all these places. What can you expect when the only example children had to go on was from the nuns themselves? The sad fact is that bullying was ignored in Nazareth Houses simply because the nuns did not encourage good relationships either between siblings or other children and it was survival of the fittest in many cases. The majority of these women were ill-educated, ignorant, cruel and incapable of showing love to a child and those who side with them to the point of calling others liars are no better than they were and you all deserve each other.

Margaret, your response to Bernadette Quinn, echo's the sentiments of all of us who suffered abuse, sexual, physical, and verbal from the Nuns and bullying from other children.
For some reason, Mrs Quinn seems to be in permanent denial that abuse took place in Nazareth House, Belfast? The facts speak for themselves. We are wasting our time trying to convince Mrs Quinn otherwise.
Thank you for your post Margaret.x

Corporal punishment was everywhere. I never said the nuns never used it neither did I say that it wasn't in the schools or in ones own home, but, what I did say is that I was bullied along with a load of other girls in the yard, Girls who liked to take their temper on those who were weaker than themselves for no just reason other than to make themselves look hard and big in front of everyone else and the nuns weren't there to see. One was so scared by the bullies that one couldn't tell as the punishment would have been made worse for touting. These are the people I want to take for abuse. Margaret lets not confuse my wording as I also said I was reared in Nazareth House 352 Ormeau Road Belfast so I can comment on the goings on as I was there from a baby until adulthood, 1961, other convents I couldn't comment as I wasn't transferred over the Irish Ocean. I can only talk about what I truely know, not surmise

Cheryl, I left there in 1963 when I was 15 but left behind my sister, Anne. I used to visit her once a month and then one day when I came she was gone.

Corporal punishment is something entirely different from 'abuse'...We were 'punished' for crimes we did not commit. The punishment did NOT fit the 'crime'! Psychological abuse has a long lasting effect right through into adulthood, leaving many who suffered with trauma of the mind, more painful to deal with as there are no visible scars.

We were children then. Children do fight, especially so when you have so many children all concentrated in one place. This is not about fighting, or even bullying for that matter. This is about neglect, across the board ABUSE, physical, sexual, emotional, and psychological - frightening children, locking them in the Crypt, making them sit in freezing cold baths of Jeyes Fluid because they wet, hitting them with wooden coathangers and the back of a wooden hairbrush, kicking children when they are kneeling, pulling their hair until they nearly lose consciousness, battering a child because they wet/soiled themselves. You could sit here all day and you would still not get to the end of the abuse perpetrated on us as young children. I recall being so hungry I had to go outside to the yard and eat grass. I remember having vomit forced into my mouth like it was yesterday. There is no crime greater than the long-term damage many of us still suffer now. If we couldn't, as a massive class action get these people put away, how do you think you would get someone prosecuted for bullying. It is not corporal punishment, it is abuse clear and simple and you know it, Bernadette Quinn and it went on in EVERY Nazareth House, even in Nazareth House, Belfast and you know that, but you are too busy being grateful to a bunch of old harridans who had no business being left in charge of a child.

Hi,Cheryl. I remember Sister Columbus and Sister Edwards - both a couple of animals. I've still got the marks on my legs from where Columbus pushed me into a bycycle and the sprocket went through one bit of my leg and came out the other bit.
You'll find plenty of support here, Cheryl, except of course from those who think we should be grateful for the roof over our heads and that would have been a good reason to beat the crap out of us. Stay strong - it's hard, I know, but you have the rest of us here.X

I did find my sister, Cheryl, but it didn't work out. It's difficult to pick up the pieces when you haven't known someone for so long. the nuns told me my mother was dead. I found her a few years back but she died a month later. she was 77. The nuns told us so many lies, very cruel. Yeh, I remember the malt every day. Same here with the sibling thing. I didn't know I had a brother till I saw him sitting across the aisle from me in the Church until someone told me his name and I put two and two together. He also disappeared.

Hi Wiseupxx,

I saw the 'who do you think you are' programme. I sat bolt upright when Nazareth House was mentioned. I was in the Hammersmith one from 1970-1980. In the programme the archivist told her the bare details of her great great grandmother's time in NH, ie, date of admission and reason for leaving, in this case 'taken by grandparents. At the very least NH in Hammersmith should be able to give you details of the dates you were in NH. You could also try Social Services or www.careleaversreunited.com There are quite a few Nazareth Houses listed there and a whole link dedicated to access to records. What kind of records are you looking for? Bear in mind that NH in Hammersmith are very aware of former inmates looking for records. When i went back in 1998 just to visit, the nuns were very defensive.

Hope this helps
