Eeeek, you've got some anger issues man. Get over yourself and open up to a little human decency. "Not all people are created equalt"?????Have you read the US Constitution? Maybe China would be more your speed!
"All men are created equal in terms of the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness; the constitution does not mean equality in terms of intelligence, talent, physical strength, and a multitude of other human qualities. Perhaps you need a teacher to help you read and understand what you read so that you do not present yourself as one who was created with a scallion for a brain.

This discussion is almost laughable. Longer days of ineffective methods and ineffective instruction will not solve the problem. We need a new model of instruction and highly trained teachers to deliver it. It is the QUALITY of education that is lacking, not the QUANTITY of hours. It is not the parents and students who don't want change, it is the teachers. Sure they do a lot of extra work outside school hours. So does everyone else in the private sector. And, lest you forget, they get 16 weeks of vacation time a year.

Betch you're jealous. And they get health benefits and retirement pensions that don't disappear like your 401K. Can't stand it,can you? Maybe you, too could be a teacher.

Truffles: Gotta be careful when mentioning retirement pensions because even though it has been mentioned in here dozens of times people have trouble with the fact that the teachers are fully funding their pensions with their own money, and NOT tax dollars. Somebody like Leom Res will probably have trouble comprehending that concept! But I'll bet you are right that they are jealous. They could have chosen to get an advanced degree so they could be a teacher..."with all the benefits", and work for the pay that a teacher receives. But these people wanted to make more money in the private sector with less responsibility. Their choice, but notice who is the first to yak about it! If teachers have it so great it must make Leom Res feel pretty stupid for not taking advantage of it when they were younger and could have earned a masters degree in education, instead of working for K-mart.

A small brain is preferable to a small heart any day. May the force be with you oh heartless, intolerant one.

Truffles: I see that "Heartless " (from United State)" is just "BLAME BLAME BLAME (from United State)" with a new name. Regardless of them trying to pull a fast one it is nice to see them confess to their "small brain" and ignorance. They probably thought they could get away with the name change and nobody would notice. This ignorant person STILL does not get it, and hasn't a clue as to what is written in the constitution. They think that "equal intelligence" is promised in the constitution, and therefor it happens. I guess they just don't get it because they are incapable of getting it...which was our whole point to begin with...some people have lower than average intelligence and are slow learners. I also love the fact that we are "heartless" and "intolerant" because we acknowledge that people are different and you just can't pigeon hole everybody. I guess this guy said it best to make our point when he confessed his ignorance...point, game, match!

FYI. Are you guys for real? Some bloggers prefer to keep a common moniker for all entries. Others prefer to use their moniker to make an additional point. I am of the latter variety. So glad you think you've won something.

Actually, I DID go to school to be a teacher and decided it wasn't for me. I could have chosen that profession and done all the citizens a disservice and the students as well. I WOULD have been part of the problem and chose not to. And I would be careful making assumptions. I actually DO have an advanced degree in business, health insurance and a pension. I make a significant amount more than a teacher. Nope, not jealous. The grass is definitely greener on my side of the fence. I don't have a problem with teachers or their profession. I have a problem with the way the education system works.

I agree Leom...our education system could use a complete overhaul. The environment and technology available now to teach is so different from what has been available in the past, and the students would prefer the using of this technology in their education...the resistance many times comes from the schools themselves, and the unwillingness to welcome and enact change that will benefit the students...measurable change is what is needed, not experimentation with our children as the guinnea pigs.

Until Leominster comes up with a plan to make sure that every teacher is great, they should not be imposing their shabby selves on my child.

I'd take the kids smarts over the school committee's anyday. I can't even believe that they are entertaining this idea.

What is the standard school day now? I would like to compare it with American. I do not think American school days are very long. I would just like to know what your children experience.
