When I first read this story I figured it took place in the united states.

Sorry, very sorry for this man's plight. It's inexcusble. But I can say there were NO men on THAT fire dept. What is happening to humanity?

Prayers for the family. My deepest condolences for their loss.

All that comes about at the same time as the Tube Bombing enquiry, which also underlines quite a number of failing of the Fire Brigade.

Witnesses have reported long delays before the firemen went down the tunnels to rescue casualties; they were waiting to be told it was safe. Tube staff and ambulance team were already at work underground, attending to the victims, whilst firemen at the surface wanted an official 'all clear' before moving.

But at the same time, the Fire Brigade Union goes on strike on bonfire day, because it refuses the new shift pattern which apparently affects their 'other jobs'. They expect public sympathy...
